Just today bought a 7017-6020 off the bay. Cannot wait for it to arrive.
Awesome, post some pictures!

Excellent info, thank you for compiling this!! I have a 7017-6050 and it really is lovely and a neglected watch in Seiko's chronograph range

Greatly appreciated this informative thread! A model I never paid much attention to til now and now have a much greater appreciation for.

Some of my favorites here. I have the -6050 and -6020. Don’t forget the very similar 7015-7010 which may be my favorite of the three.

Hi

My 7017-6050 was stolen as part of a major burglary at home whilst we were on hols last month in which 90% of my collection disappeared 😥😥😥. All that’s left are the ones that were with me on holiday, a dozen or so that were with watchmakers having work done, and a few that were in transit from Japan. One of those was this 7017-6020. I was wearing it all day today to ‘test-drive‘ it whilst also looking up other examples online on a ‘compare and contrast’ basis. It runs very well indeed.

My first conclusion when it arrived and I did some preliminary snooping online was that the watch is not authentic. I was worried about the outer bezel, dial and caseback. They didn’t seem to match the vast majority of examples I found online. Having done some more research, I have arrived at the following hypothesis, and I’d appreciate any input to either refute or corroborate my findings ( where I’m still very unsure about my suppositions, I have marked it with a ??):

The 7017-6020 was produced for only a short period of time, probably from around mid-1970 to late ‘71??
There were two variants.
Early watches have the dial reference 7017-6020R ( same ref as on the 6050) and are ‘proof’ dials. They have an outer bezel in black, with a tachometer scale from 1000 to 60.
Again like the 7017-6050 reference, later versions of the 7017-6020 from mid ‘71 onwards have a different ‘no text’ dial with the reference 7017-6060R and a different outer bezel. It is two-tone black and red and has a tachymeter scale that runs from 120 to 41. This is the same bezel that is found on the later incarnations of the 6050??
Unusually, the later ‘no text’ version of the 6020 is significantly rarer than the ‘proof version’??

As regards my own example, I now believe it to be a genuine example of a later ‘no text’ version of the 6020, whose correct outer bezel has faded and lost its red colouring. Which makes me wonder whether the bracelet that it came on is also authentic and correct for this particular watch - anybody out there got a 6020 ‘no text’ example with what is known to be its original bracelet?

Some recent observations:

The internal rotating bezel of the 7017-6050 comes in two variants.

The most common variant is missing the number 10, and has a luminous pip in its place (see first three pictures).

The other less common variant has the number 10 and has no luminous pip (see last picture).

The 7017-6050 dial also comes in two variants.

Adding my thanks for the excellent write-up, I'm bringing this up again as I'd have a question re dials variants.

Does the proof dial belong to the 6020 and the "no-text" to the 6050, or are they both found on the 6050? If so, in which year the switch took place?

Thanks
