As per the title would you trade/sell most of your watches to pay for one watch, a grail of sorts ?

Go ahead and do it John.

Which grail are you considering ?

Quite honestly, after all the hard work and the thrill of acquring so many mini-grails, I think it would be reallt hard to do it.

But there are a few watches that I could do it for. None of them are Seikos though, because in the Seiko world what I don't already have is not enough trade away what I have worked to get.

As you said Jon, it wouldent be a Seiko as I am happy with what I have and have had and would still keep but as in my case i'm getting older and I tend to be a boring old fart because I wear the same watch for ages, for me much of the thrill and enjoyment has always been in the hunt/desire and then sorting the watch out but after that many just go in a case to be looked at now and again or used to pose a photo, age really does start to be important as to whats in the box especially when my wife knows how much each one cost me ($5 :) ).

None of them are Seikos though,

Contrary to #4, I think I would. I collect watches since i was 18 & am now 50. Now I own over 30 watches, mostly Seikos. As with other toys, esp. those need maintenance like tube amplifiers & cars , cameras whereas those maintenance had become a burden to me since after fevering for 30 years, those maintenance would become a burden when one is not fevering; I had reached the stage of too much & always thinking of going back to own JUST ENOUGH for your need - so 1 very good ,dream watch or tube amp or car or camera is my new enlightenment.
That being said, those whom would like to collect things tend not to buy just one, but a bunch - whether it be a vertical or horizontal collection - so buying just enough for one's need is going against the nature of us hoarders.
P.S. I may not have answered the question. My grail only 1 watch - maybe a big crown Rolex, just maybe.

Yep, I would keep about 6 then the rest could be moved on with no intention of replacing them. The proceeds would go towards a Seiko GS diver, a Hamilton field watch or an Eterna Airforce II.
This would leave me with 6 or seven watches to rotate. (y) (y)

Probably....but I can't think of anything I want badly enough....
I did once almost do it. Some years ago the local Rolex dealer had an achingly gorgeous no-date Sub in their window. I would have had to cash in all my toys for it but luckily when I tried it on it didn't feel like anything special. Dodged a bullet there.
( Although if I had bought it and looked after it I would probably have doubled my money by now ).

I would not sell all my watches for one expensive watch. I would no longer have a collection and I like collecting and tinkering. Also I seem to prefer to wear some of my cheaper ordinary vintage Seiko's.

The closest I would come to this would to be to sell off all my duplicate 7548's and a few other watches that have fallen out of favour and buy a Speedmaster and Doxa sub, or whatever takes my fancy come the time.

Imagine the fun perhaps building another collection Mike :)

I don’t think I could cope with just one watch. I know for sure that I could never drop my existing collection to just one member.

My collection is pretty eclectic, but there are three particular items that have been bought specifically to commemorate events in my life - my engagement, a specific job promotion and the passing of a very dear friend. I can never part with these three.

However, they cover most bases - an everyday watch (field watch style), a diver and a dress watch.

Im sorted for a three-watch collection, but I can’t drop down to just the “one” from my current hoard.

I often thought that I would and could but I'm down to such a small number now that I really, really enjoy, so I'm not sure I could get much more enjoyment out of my watches with another "grail" added.

I found it hard to know and enjoy a watch I only wore once every couple months. I reduced down to my "mini" grails and couldn't be happier wearing and enjoying them. They all fit and go together in a special way for me. Would be hard to get by on just a couple watches.

You know Mike that's where I am probably headed over time too. I have sold off so many watches that I really liked having but if in the course of a year's time I never wore it then it had to have something pretty special going on or else I move them on to a good new home.

If I distill the whole shebang down to 20 I'd have done an unreal job of uncluttering.

Hello.Because our hobby is watch collection,i think is wrong to give respect to a watch if it is expensive only...i could sell my watches to buy only one, but this is not good and normal for me every watch has its value and beauty regardless of the price, well thats my opinion, and of course it is not truth that only expensive watches look well after long time.I love my watches im a big Seiko fan.

To be honest I don't think I have any grails left (I own most of them) but I like a varied watch collection of many makes and one watch to rule them all wouldn't fly with me.

I still love the thrill of seeing what my friends have up for sale even though we haven't been able to meet up for a while now.

There was a time when I felt the value of a quality swiss watch would fund loads of watches in general and I wanted a collection, not a show piece.
Of late due to not wearing a watch much at all, I sometimes think the opposite now, nothing super fancy, a Tag perhaps, Omega a bit too pricey & Rolex even more so.
However if I hung on to my small number of half decent oldies then the rest (which I am thinking of moving on) wouldn't raise enough dough anyway. 😟
