Acrylic crystal replacement for SKX007 ?

Hello,

Could someone tell me what diameter I should order if I want to replace the 31.5mm + gasket hardlex on the 7s26-0020 case with a super dome acrylic with tension ring ?
I guess that pressing a 31.5 acrylic with the original gasket should work but it's not the way to install tension ring crystal right ?

Thanks in advance,

Olivier

^-^ Olivier, sorry to get your hopes up, I just wanted to ask you to post up your findings on this issue 'cos me and poll's could want to do something like this. All I can suggest is that if the acrylics are cheep to measure the hole and get one on size, and one slightly over.

I like the idea of using the original gasket, seems like a polly dodge to me ;) , it would not be critical for non-diving use?

Hep !

I'm asking because someone did it on WUS using a 31.5 acrylic with T-Ring + gasket:

I guess it is OK for swimming/bathing but it should be better with a 32/32.1mm acrlyc/t-ring and some cement right ?

Not going to dive with this one, just for the look of the final watch with high dome.

I'd seriously suggest not fitting a TR crystal into a nylon gasket. The gaskets have a very slight internal taper to allow the (completely) rigid mineral glass to press into them but a TR crystal has (very slight) "give" to allow it to enter the rigid case. Put the two together and you're in danger of the glass unseating.

Better to remove the seal and fit according to the case size, which will normally be the "stated" seiko crystal size (in your case 31.5mm). Unless they've changed things recently, Seiko minerals tend to be sized including the gasket even though you dont get the gasket with them. To be sure, remove the crystal and gasket and measure the case before ordering.

Allow an extra tenth to get good compression to the case, so probably a 316 TR is what you'll end up with. Should seal perfectly well for normal use with or without cement.

Hi Joe,

7s26-0020 case is a bit less than 32mm (31.95 with my analog caliper). I think I'll order 32 and 32.1 + cement for my tests.

It sounds like this mod would be perfect for a ceramic bezel! http://www.parniswatch.net/index.php?gOo=goods_search_list.dwt&gcat=70 The ID is slightly smaller than Seiko and they slant up toward the middle but I've seen them used before. With the slant and a standard crystal it doesn't look right but with the high dome I bet it would fit perfectly!

Thanks for the link. I've ordered a black ceramic one.
Waiting for all the parts now, it will take few weeks.

So far mod will (should) be based on:

- 7s26-0020 case
- PMMM dial (or SKX031 ... too bad I can't source a SKX171 dial for decent price)
- Steel/silver plongeur hands
- Acrylic domed crystal
- Dave's coin edge bezel
- Ceramic "submariner" black insert

Update:

Now waiting for the ceramic bezel, all other parts are received:

Have a nice week end !

instead of making a new thread thought Id bump this.

I too am looking to mod my skx007 but the biggest dilemma is picking out the right acrylic crystal.

As above poster said i am looking for 31.6 crystal with tension ring but I found the OPs mod thread and acrylic crystal was a no go and had to use yobokies sapphire crystal instead, because the acrylic crystal didnt fit through the ceramic bezel insert. coincidentally I am trying to use the same ceramic insert.

Heres a sample rolex plexiglass profile view and I am specifically looking for something like one on the bottom right where theres edge on the outer rim:

rather than having the convexity beginning at the bezel level like this:

Help a noob out here ???

This sounds like a rather difficult task because of the number of things being done. The change in profile of the bezel insert means that it will already require a taller crystal than before. To have the crystal stick up beyond that will make for an extremely thick watch. Also, because the inner diameter of the new insert is slightly smaller, it will sit on top of most crystals that fit the case. The only thing I can think of would be to come up with some sort of spacer to use a smaller diameter crystal. This could prove to be quite risky though.

On my 6309 I let the insert sit on top of the crystal and I'm quite happy with the results, although I know this isn't the look you're going for.

I need to get a glare shot because the crystal doesn't show up too well in this. Looking down at my wrist it appears to be level with the insert.

thanks for your reply.

I was under the impression the slant wasn't that significant.

height wise, the second picture is perfect but taller edge around and less convexity.

if you could get a profile view of your watch and tell me which plexi you used that will be helpful. since you have the bezel I am using :)
To start out, My watch is a 6309, so you would not be able to use the same crystal. I also had to modify the crystal as it was too tall. because the bezel now sits over the crystal this causes obvious problems. I shaved a bit off the bottom edge of the crystal, fitted it, and tried to put the bezel on. I repeated this until everything fit together. Since the SKX uses a smaller crystal to begin with you might be able to get some of the effect you're going for. On mine I used a Stella extra high dome in 32.75, but again, you will need to measure and experiment since the SKX is different. I'll try to get a profile view soon, my camera seems to be hiding right now. I hope this helps, this was my first time doing the mod and it was all trial and error. Since the watches are different I can offer tips but the trial and error will probably need to be repeated.
