Seiko 8F32-0049 Calendar setting (or NOT)

I have a nice Seiko 8F32-0049 [A0] Titanium Perpetual Calendar and, last year, the battery finally died.
I bought a new one and transferred over the plastic sticker, that says "DON'T PEEL OFF", from the old battery.

Last September I printed out the date setting procedure, and after many hours of swearing, I finally got the watch working again with the right date.
All was fine until the 28th of FEB this year (2015).
Obviously I had set the leap year wrong.

Back to my instructions and trying to reset the date.
BUT the setting procedure does not seem to be working like last time?
Each time I touch one of the setting contacts it jumps 14 or more numbers.
This happens on 0, Y, M and D.
After many "happy" hours I finally managed to set it to Y3 M3 D3 (you can see why I tried to do it on 03/03/2015).
I had finally set the date again and I was all happy.
Then I pushed the crown back in, the date then advanced to 27?

I have tried MANY, MANY times and cannot set the date this time. Every time I touch O (or YMD) the numbers click, click for about 14 times. Setting the 0 to 1 can takes ages and whatever I try I cannot set the date. I should add that all I have to do is place ONE point of the tweezers on 0 to start the clicking, I do not even have to short the battery with the other point.

HELP - PLEASE!

Hi again barryw.

I have also removed the battery for a few hours and then put it back.
Then reset the AC again (hold AC to + for 15 sec with crown in, then pull crown fully out twice).
When I then try to set the date to 1 with the 0 tab and the crown fully out it jumps about 15 numbers.

Any ideas?

Wrap it up nicely and save it for posterity then treat yourself to a 6309/6105 ? :)

Hi , you state ,"I should add that all I have to do is place ONE point of the tweezers on 0 to start the clicking, I do not even have to short the battery with the other point."...
and it made me wonder if the battery is shorting out by moving around when You put the point of your tweezers on it or O ....or is somehow making contact with the case .
Try another battery .

Thanks for your help Ricardo.

The battery is almost brand new ( a few months) and the setting was working fine when I fitted it. I have tried shorting the contacts with various implements, shorting, not shorting, holding the battery etc. Had it been some sort of loose connection or shorting I think I would have noticed. But I will order another battery if you think that may help.

I have done some experimenting and it looks like the tweezers are using ME to short to the battery. Touching 0 does nothing if I use an insulated tip or I am not holding the watch. It clicks if I short the contacts or if I'm holding the watch and the metal tweezers. It only seems to change the numbers (15 times) if I'm holding the battery in with my thumb or just holding the watch case. It does not click if I just hold the watch by the strap or do not hold it at all.

STRANGE?

Does anyone know where I can get a battery WITH the sticker as I had to remove the sticker from the old battery and reuse it.

Hi TheTigerUK

Not too keen on the 6309/6105 and to be honest I'm running out of Seiko storage space.

I have been buying Seiko watches since I was at school, many years ago.
My first Seiko was a lovely SEIKO PEPSI 6139-6002 but I broke the crown back in the 80s. It is still safely wrapped up at my Mother's house.

Since then I have had:

  • SEIKO SQ 070421 8223-7060 [A3] Just stopped working one day
  • SEIKO Sports 100 5933-6010 Used to stop at 11 and now only the second hand works.
  • SEIKO chronograph 7T32-7C60 [A0] Works sometimes and then just stops - cleaning/service?
  • SEIKO SQ100 904070 5Y23-6130 [A4] Broken coil I think (my fault)
  • SEIKO square 5Y30-5060 [RO] Working (I hardly ever wear it)
They are all "wrapped up nicely and stored for posterity".

And now this one is broken.
I am loathed to send it to be repaired as I've had bad experiences and it's quite expensive. I usually find it cheaper to just buy another one.
I was hoping that I was doing something stupid and some knowledgeable person would point me in the right direction so that I can use this perpetual calendar for another few years. I hate just throwing things away.

I am now thinking that the battery is shorting somehow, as Ricardo suggested. Probably the sticker not on quite right?

Don't give up yet. These can be a pain in the proverbial but I change at least one a month and now have a decent idea.

The issue with only touching one point of your tweezers is down to the fact that as well asntoucing the small contact you are also inadvertently touching the battery as well. You are shorting it without knowing.

There are some good down loads on the setting procedure .. One in particular. Do a search and it will help. The procedure has to be followed exactly.

Before doing the ac reset are you pulling the crown out to second click, pushing it in, then pulling it out again ?

Well I can tell you if you want the correct Seiko battery order it from Jules & Borel. They have it listed under just the generic part number but the item they will send you will be a Seiko battery. That's were I would start. Not all parts are created equal and when I have weird problems like this the first thing I do is get the original factory part. There is no removing the sticker from the old battery because with the Seiko battery it comes with a new one already.

Thanks everyone.

Yes I've seen the video, it helped me a lot the first time I set the date.
Yes, I know how to set the date (I've done it 3 or 4 times).
I will order the Seiko battery and try that.

However the ODD thing is that it clicks through about 15 numbers when I short any contact (except A/C). And odd that it clicks when I'm just holding the case and not touching the battery. I will try and create another "sticker" from tape - any advice?

Hold on - I'm not too sure a SEIKO battery would help.
The one I installed worked fine when I inserted it 3 or 4 months ago.
Surely if there was a problem or the sticker was not on properly it would have had problems then?

Blast just noticed that Jules & Borel is in USA - I'm in the UK.

That's why it pays to fill out you profiles when you join a forum.:)

Ask some of the members here from the UK if Cousins carries the Seiko part number 301A 95N1. I am willing to bet they do. If they do I would order it. Many people may try and tell you the other battery is the same but if a generic battery would work just find them why does Seiko have a special part number for a battery kit for the Perpetual calendar watches? The Seiko battery kit is not expensive so to me it makes no sense to use a generic battery especially because when the battery goes 100% dead it takes more than just unscrewing a case and popping a new battery in to get it working again.

I have changed dozens of these and never once used the Seiko item. I just use a Panasonic. Used to get them from Cousins but now these batteries aren't shipped by the Royal Mail, they have to pay expensive couriers to ship them. I just bought some Panasonic ones from elsewhere for ÂŁ3.50 each shipped. Never ever had a problem with them.

If you haven't got correct setting instructions you are on a hiding to nothing

Thanks barryW

I could not see why I would need to buy a "proper" SEIKO battery and you have saved me the bother (and the expense).

It seems that everyone is thinking that I do not have the setting instructions or do not know how to do it. Once again I have reset the date on this watch several times, fiddly but not a problem, as long as you are methodical. This is NOT the problem!

The problem is that when I click on one of the contacts the number now jumps 15 times, no matter how or what I use to short the contacts. Either something is shorting in the watch or the electronic circuit board has failed. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?

Oh well, I will just close it up and try to ignore the date.
It's a great looking watch and keeps perfect time ... and it's own date?
