To be honest both are useful, however I use the metal one after finding the plasticy one a little difficult to grip the mainplate. Good for holding dials, though when doing a relume.

 

I'm am with GuyJ on this holder and I have had problems with doing many.
I like the Metal version from Bergeon best. On the plastic version it lacks the gripping when being tighten.

 

Buy the best you can afford. Metal is the best. China copys are usally no good. Either machined to bad tolerances or bad chrome job. In this case Bergeon is the sh..

Buy from cousinsuk and you get a good price.

 

I bought several cheap ones. They are slowly but surely ending up in the trash. Their job in life is to hold a movement and they can't. I do have a plastic one and it works better than the cheap metal ones.

Bergeon will be on my next parts order. Buy once, cry once.

 

Get the metal 4040, which is the larger size than what you posted. The 4039 you posted will work for most mainplates you’ll likely work with but is not big enough in my experience to hold a dial from a diver for instance.
