A few days later he sees me wearing my MM300. He looks at it, and likes it. We talk about the monocoque case, the brushing of the hands, the case lines, the movement, accuracy, etc. When I told him the price he was shocked that I paid that much for a Seiko. Never mind that he was talking about buying a Rolex at 2 1/2 times the price. I asked him why he was ok with a $6000 sub? He said "it's a Rolex ".

So there you have it, folks.

Brand image is a very powerful tool in a manufacturer's marketing dept's arsenal.
It allows them to get away with some things other "lesser" brands would be vilified for.
BMW is a prime example - compared with Lexus.
B&O is another, not to mention Apple, and Red Bull.
All exhibit the ability to charge a premium for a variety of reasons, which all have built off of an enviable reputation due to their brand's image.

In the case of Apple and B&O, it can't be argued that no-one else in their sectors comes close to producing such an engineered fit and finish to their products, and long term reliability and customer service also play their part as well. Something Lexus also gets right, but not the German marques, oddly.

In the end it makes no sense not to admire every well-made watch regardless of the name on the dial. I for appreciate watches not just for their mechanicals but also their place in horology.
Agree

You see me defending grand seiko to the death in this thread! Always a few regardless of which forum that can't get past the name seiko! TRF is filled with great watch guys that know there stuff, lets not judge based on a few bad apples ;)

I was at the Birmingham watch fair last week wearing my MM/Tuna mod and i was asked 5 times by stall holders what i was wearing and the last guy who was selling Rollies and Omega's said what are you wearing, looks great, can i have a look ? i took it of and passed it to him and.........."oh it's a Seiko", passed it back and that was the end of the conversation.

So true. I have several vintage Omegas and Rolex. People comment on them and see them as a status symbol. The usual questions follow - How much? Or is it real? Seiko generates no conversation - for good or for bad. Perhaps sad, but true.

Well, for me it's the opposite. When I wear my Grand Seiko I often get compliments. As I don't like talking with strangers, I always end the conversation with an "It's just a Seiko". It always works.

I have. Sold a 16750 GMT and a SubC to buy more GS's two years ago :)
I have too. Moved generally out of collecting Rolexes into experiencing the joy of multiple GS ownership. Wonderful wonderful watches.

I still like Rolex - I have a Seadweller and have just picked up an Air King and a 70's oysterdate. There's no doubt the brand is a large part of what you are buying and occasionally I feel in the mood for that.

well well , i wonder what archie luxury would have to say about this ?? ;)
He'd say "I'M A MASSIVE, MASSIVE TOOL."

Well he wouldn't exactly say that but you'd pick up on the cleverly hidden message that he's so desperate to get across.
