Hi Guys,
I recently got a seiko Grand Quartz 9943-8020, which retail price in 1978 was 140,000 Yen.
I was wondering how much correspond at that time this money for a person, and how much would correspond today.
Thank you very much!

The exchange in 1978 was 210.39 to 1 USD

140k divided by 210.39 is 665 USD

So, in today's money, that would be 2613 USD

But 1978's and 2020's money arent directly comparable. It only corrects for inflation, not for increase in wealth etc. 665$ in 1978 was relatievely speaking much more than 2613 in 2020.

I understand what you are saying. The REAL difference in my opinion which distorts the idea of conversion is the rising cost of housing relative to income over time today vs. the 70s in both Japan and the US.

Can you imagine the trouble of going back pre-WWII, or even into ancient times calculating relative prices vs income? Historians do this all the time.

Yes its really hard to compare the worth of money in different periods. But with the inflation calculators you can get a rough idea. Grand Quartzes were expensive back in the day.

If you really want to see 'expensive in the day' look at the solid 18K gold versions of the Grand Quartz in the catalogue all three variations were over one million Yen!!
450484

And even my humble 3803-7040 first generation production quartz, was over 100,000Yen in 1972! Relatively much more expensive than the Grand Quartz in 1978..

If you're wondering how much something is worth, like an antique or collectible, start by looking it up online. Search for your item on eBay or Google to find the price of similar things, or upload a picture of it to a valuation website, where experts will estimate your item's worth;)💻 !
