The 62Mas returns home at last...

So, I had been looking for a 62Mas for quite some time and snagged one from 1965 on the Bay several months back that met my "patina measure". :) she arrived as expected but had dust under the crystal and was gaining an unruly 10 minutes an hour. After a visit to Richard in the UK, here she is...running like a champ!

As a "bonus", here's the 6619 I posted the other day next to the 62Mas. This is an absolute stunner for $70 plus service. I'm happy to have found her before she was pillaged for her hands. What a nice big watch with a stunning dial and design.

Great looking watches, especially the 62MAS is a stunner!
That 62mas looks a beauty but no 62mas thread is complete without a picture of the case back !! (imo).
Very nice, your 62mas appears to be a small crown example from the first two months of production so I'm guessing it's a 6217-8000 from April or May 1965? If it's got a legible caseback I'd be interested as I've never seen a 6217-8000 one that hasn't been worn almost smooth!
In fact following on here's three I have on the bench at the moment

two from 1966 and one from 1965

The first from Jan 1966 is just worn but the logo and script is quite legible (better than it looks in my poor photo)

The second from May 1966 has been mechanicaly polished so it's almost smooth - who would do such a thing? It always baffles me!

And the third is a 6217-8000 from April 1965 that's been worn smooth, but you can still make out the 8000 script very faintly

mmmmmmmmmmmmm what about the 6159 and 6215 ?

That's a fair point...she's well worn and the outer area looks like the sight impaired have had a go or 10. But...will take a shot tomorrow in natural lighting!

Perhaps the king of the vintage divers that can be found.

Now you've piqued my interest. I didn't realize that the crown size actually changed after the first 2 months. The SN is 5404347 so April it is! The back is worn but everything is visible. I'll take a shot tomorrow using decent light if my iPhone can hack it. Otherwise, I'll wait until home with the better camera.

Any other interesting trivia I should know about these early pieces?

Thanks!

Yes a purposeful play on words as we all know there are very high quality models called King Seiko. I just love the 62 MAS that much. Most likely my preference for the Sport and Diver models showing itself.:)

The crown is smaller and the case tube design is different where it meets the case, it's also slightly shorter than the 8001 - see my comparison picture, the 8000 is on top

The lug tips appear less substantial on the 8000 but that could be due to wear

Apart from those slight changes the rest of the watch is identical to the 8001.

The 6159-7000 and 6215-7000 are pretty decent divers in there own right :) but i agree the 62mas is very nice.

I remember the post here recently with the 6215-7000 that was found. I would definitely love to have one in my collection too but there is something about the 62 MAS for me that I can't explain. Everything about it just looks perfect in my eyes. I have to constrain myself from bidding on every one that comes up on eBay!

Thanks for all the info. Here's a caseback shot. As you mention on one, it's more visible than in the pics and everything is readable but still highly worn. Near the case opening detents, it appears that "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan had a go at opening it (sorry for the WWF/WWE reference!).

Regardless of the caseback butchery that's still the best preserved logo and script I've seen on a 6217-8000. Congratulations on owning one of these, they only made them for a matter of weeks!
