I had the exact same thing happen to a suunto watch. It might be due to sweat and leaving it stored for prolonged periods of time

I know you are in New Zealand, but was your buyer somewhere cold?
I once ordered a watch with an original GL831 strap that arrived in the dead of winter, and the strap was crumbled in the box.

This is the reason why any watch I wear has a Uncle Seiko band...
You can not best them

With the way the straps look very glazed I'd say it's been exposed(cooked) to alot of heat. Maybe the box had been stored in a car for too long?
