So...let's talk the new Prospex GMT export line, shall we

Greetings!

I think the new Prospex GMT line to hit international markets are very good looking.
Still think that their prices are artificially inflated due to higher demand than what's been supplied to the vendors, which is always the case when we're talking about Seiko and their new launches.

The design specifically is a radical revamp of the old shrouded diver, with the skeletonized laterals and the cut out spaces to accomodate the large crown (which BTW emulates the old 6159-7010 crown in terms of sheer shape, with a slight twist given by the enamel color around) and the (IMO, at least) useless and totally dispensable power reserve button (present in almost all of the non-direct drive kinetic line).

The new kinetic caliber 5M85 (which seems to be a variation with GMT complication of the new and 'improved' 5M82 that came to replace the discontinued 5M62 - check Thomas' blog: http://yeomanseiko.com/2014/01/18/seiko-kinetic-diver-ska579p2/ ) promises a better charge hold up when not in use, which will remain to be seen as the years go by.

A 24mm lug width on a Seiko diver is a highly unusual feature, and once again a radical departure from the brand's conservatory philosophy in keeping design points same ole' same. I only remember ever owning one Seiko diver with a lug distance other than the staples 20mm and 22mm, which was my long gone Velatura Diver's 200m SNDA63P1, with its 26mm lugs!

Well, having said all that, one thing still intrigues me: these new Prospex export models are on extremely short supply. Note the emphasis on 'export'. Yes. An export model that already starts selling in an almost 'nowhere to be found' state. Some vendors are offering pre-orders on the variants, which only helps to drive the prices already inflated up and up.

The bizarre thing is that you can buy a SBBN015 (a JDM-only model, none the less) easier than you can find a SUN019, as of now.

So does anyone know if the models SUN019, SUN021 and SUN023 can be found in any of the usual ebay stores that we could always find our Seiko diver's? I remember not long ago that we had a plethora of options in terms of sellers coming from Singapore that offered almost every Seiko diver's export model on ebay. Where did they go?

So far, the only place online I know of to order one of these Prospex models is AZ Finetime, which is a Seiko AD, hence selling with official prices. Where are the other sellers? Better yet, where are the deals on these ones (which was always one of the reasons why we all loved Seiko)?

Please, chime in guys. :)

I must admit that i have also seen some folks stating they are hard to come by. But I got 2 of the models 3 weeks ago at very good prices. I just don't think people are looking hard enough - or don't want to order on line. Thats fine - its their choice. But here in the UK if we don't order on-line (and usually from abroad) we end up paying 50% over.

Something i have seen though is that prices are going up. I could go to 3 very good on line stores now and get good deals - but maybe 10% higher than what they were only a few weeks ago. Strange

They are out there.

Gotta disagree about the power reserve button - i think they are a pretty handy
You can try to email kseiya even if a watch isn't on his website...he is very helpful.
I found several ebay sellers that carry the SUN023. All are located in the US. All are just over $500.

I had to order one for myself today as well.
Chris! Great to see you around!

I like the look of the shrouded GMT models, but I'm not a fan of Kinetic movements. Shame they don't make them with a cell-powered high-accuracy quartz movement.

Best wishes,
Myles

Hey man! How's it going?! :D

If I could have my pick about the movement of choice for those GMT, it certainly would not be the kinetics, but what can I do? :undecided:

In the end, the overall look of the SUN023 has won me over. I have to have it, plain and simple.

The only bummer is that I'm finding really hard to come accross them BNIB, online, the way we used to when hunting down a new model on ebay. :undecided:
I had a try a SUN019 on the weekend at an AD in Sydney on the weekend. They are large but I like the general look and feel of the watch. :)

The list price is AU$1100 (US$1030) but I got them down to $820 (~US$770). With the prices I have seen internationally I passed on this but will keep an eye out for a reasonable price. I think after a couple of months the price will be significantly less as supply is increased.

Is there a JDM version of these yet? I have checked the usual Japanese sites (Yodobashi etc.) but do not see this listed.

My other observation I have not seen raised by others was the bracelet center links seem to be folded and not solid. :(

At this price point I would have expected solid bracelet links. This could be to reduce down the already heave weight of the watch but I felt there could have been a much nicer way to finish the bracelet.

Amen on that!

Kenetic's have their place though, nice to always have one watch ready to go at all times.

HAVE to find a SUN021 though!!

Old school sushi roll indices KILL ME! :)

I have looked high and low for a SUN 021, can't find anyone to give my $$ to.
never a fan of Kinetic but I like the color combo of this line
Personally i am glad they are kinetic. I think it adds to the watch and am glad that Seiko are sticking with them (even though they are also expanding their solar ranges)
Mine has landed in the UK now from AZT (SUN019) (no photos yet so not doing a post until I get photos sorted) - don't know about AZT selling for official prices, Chris - $511 versus a tag price of $695 (if you can even get one elsewhere) seems OK to me. Especially as I'm in rip-off UK where we pay virtually the same figure in pounds as full list price in US dollars. Even adding postage and handling fee and some import VAT it was still a bargain in my view and in some places you wouldn't have to pay that and could also opt for cheaper postage.... (Admittedly it flew quite low on last approach in respect to the last item but this is charged on selling price not list price)....

Plus the waiting 2 months after pre-order, the growing anticipation and sitting back waiting knowing I had guaranteed owning one of the first batch was half the fun!
Must get that camera sorted but I have to finish decorating porch, hall, landing and stairs first, she says ;-)
I do agreed that Dealer are making a killing ! And not offering any thing more than 15% discount.
Guess it voice down to demand and supply. Currently demand exceed the supply !
A really excellent and thought provoking topic Chris good to see You here again My Friend. At least Seiko do not see Us Brits and Yanks as second-class citizens(Pardon the Pun!).
Guys, thanks so much for all replies! Some very good ones! Please, keep them coming.

As for the brothers in the UK and the rip off tag prices from official retailers: someone's gotta pay for all that scotch sipped at the Buckingham Palace, hehehe... :p

At least you US and UK Seiko fans get to buy these Prospex locally, if willing to fork out the required dough...what about us, poor mortals located in other corners of the world (definitely not highly regarded by Seiko, as it seems...)? In my case, a nice and cozy 60% import tax will be awaiting for me if and when I decide to adopt a SUN023 to call my own.:mad::mad:

One thing is for sure: it's getting real hard to resist the temptation to get me a SUN023...

BTW, does anyone know if any of the usual Singapore dealers are already offering these new Prospex kinetics GMT for sale, over the internet?
It is possible, and this is my opinion, that since it is a new model the distribution is just started and since these "trickle" down from Seiko, they tend to keep high prices due to the high demand for a novelty item.

As soon as the market becomes somewhat saturated the prices should cone down a bit. I have seen the same thing with some of the Casio models, Cokpit series, Rangeman, and similar. start up with small availability and high prices, then continue with more availability and better prices. Including grey market etc. which a the beginning might be limited in the volume of units available.

As soon as the demand diminish then the price will go down and it will start flooding ebay, etc.
I really like the look of the watch and have wanted another GMT watch since I retired my Accutron Astronaut.

The MSRP does seem high for a quartz watch, though. I guess I'll wait a couple of months and see where the street price lands. I think it's a nice $500 watch, not a $700 watch.
