It doesnt do it for me im afraid.
Hand and dial lumes dont match, theres too much going on with a minute track on the dial and also on the chapter ring. Not sure if its the camera angles but the minute markers dont seem to align. the chapter ring defo needs sterilizing.
Needs a flat vent strap instead of the curved vent, and a 6105 dial dosnt look right in anything other than a cushion case.
My own opinions of course.
If I were looking for a 6105-a-like I might try one like this from one of the well known auction site sellers.

well if you want to get a good one for your dad..it would worth spending a bit more and getting a real one..it all depends on your budget..i know when i got my dad a watch..i tried to find a very original watch...with watches like you are looking at..they have had many hands in them and it may be more of a problem that it is worth..from what i gather you would like to have the look of the 6105 dial and hands but not the price of one..i would recommend a original 6309 7040 or 7049 or even a good 7290 and get a nice set of hands and dial ....it will all depends on your budget and skills...i recently built a watch entirely from parts and i can tell you..parts are not cheap and getting a original watch is key when it comes to a gift...you do not want the hassle of it breaking down or having problems...just my 2 cents...if i can help..please let me know...John

Very hard to make a good suggestion here.

Anything else than a 6105 won't be "the real deal" but the price are pretty high for decent ones.

Do you think your dad can live with something that wasn't from the "old days" but reminds him just because of it's look?
If yes I'd say go and get him a nice 6309-7040 and let Jaffy Jurado built Olongapos for it...maybe with a sign that has a special meaning for your dad?

Anyways...it's a very nice idea of yours and I wish you good luck :)
Have Jake B build you one based on a SKX, using the typhoon dial and 6105 handset...quality and workmanship will be guaranteed and many problems will be avoided.

Hey also make sure you get the correct style band too...that one on the pic you shown at the top is not the right style for the 6105..they make many aftermarket ones that resemble it too...that way Dad can have the right look..
Has already been said, it is a hard one but cheap after market parts will always look like cheap after market parts and do you want to give your dad cheap ?

Personally depending on budget I would go for an all original 6309-704X which can still be picked up very cheap compared to the 6105.

All it needs is hands with the matching green lume and a flat vent strap:)

That is a good model of watch (sure a cushion case would be nice but the prices are really up there now:undecided:), the dials on that is really well finished but the hand colour lume and the wavy vent strap really lets it down.
here is the 2 choices i have
are these the exact same case?

which one would you pic

My vote would be for #3 :)
well it is hard just from one pic...you need info and more pics to make any real decision...you need to know many variables...price..without those things...it is just a crap shoot....we are glad to help but you need to give us more info...what is your budget?..do you want it to look very close to the 6105?...or just generally like it?..will he wear this all the time or more of a special occasion watch?..as you may not know..any older watch should be serviced as you have no idea it's life...most old seiko's will just go and go with little or no service...but with any gift it would be a shame to have problems arise shortly after them getting it...i would say a small budget as you say you have..you should be able to get a very nice example for a few hundred dollars..they will always be "cheaper" ones on the bay but be very leary of them..they usually are problematic and will cost you more in the end than spending a few extra dollars to get the right one...John

P.S...to make it look and feel like a 6105..you need the correct band too...what you have shown in pics is just a generic wave band...you need the waffle style that makes any 6105 look and feel like it should too..

I'm no expert but I'd go for watch #3 also. Looks to me like....

Watch 1. Replacement dial & bezel? Watch looks very clean and considering it's got the wrong type of strap that would worry me as would the crappy little photo.

Watch 2. Replacement dial? Poss replacement hands? I cannot see the bevel on the hour hand. Lume looks wrong colour (color) in hands? The date wheel looks very dirty compared to the rest of the dial & hands.

I know with the clocks the old saying 'The more it's worth, the harder you need too look' comes into play with watches also.

Both are all AM parts.
No 3 dosnt have the Suwa logo under the "water 150 resist", Also the date should be white with black font.

Id pick no 2. it seems to be a more accurate representation, and seeing that dirt around the date border on no 3 plus it having an incorrect and faded date wheel would put me off
well i ended up going with this one

Crikey... those spring bars look like they are struggling to fight back gravity!! Make sure you get some fat bars with proper size tips :)
well looks like a good choice...might need a little work..you just need the right band and a very good set of fat spring bars...
I think he will be more than happy with your choice. Well done and glad to see it all worked out.
Thanks guys i went with that choice because it is a mostly complete 6309 with the aftermarket dial and hands. but the seller is respected in another forum and sells alot of these he contacted me with the watch and was very nice. i paid 150 but i am happy.
im sure my dad will want it to look a like worn and rough
