With 1000 members, it no longer feels like a chat with a few friends - are you reluctant to post ?

Reluctant to post because of new-found shyness, given readership size?

Thought others may have the same feeling, now that we can actually see how many members there are (never mind the non-registered browsers). It seems like we are now standing on a soap box in Speakers' Corner, rather than having a living room chat with a few friends. LOL.
What do you think ? (don't all reply at once!)

I was just a newbie on the old forum anyway, but I've been reading it for a long time and noticed the sense of genuine familiarity. I tend to agree about the loss of the cozy feeling - something about the old forum made it a bit more personal. Don't get me wrong, I love all the great features of the new forum, but I do think that closeness of the old one may be gone forever. I was just looking over the gigantic *20 page list* of members on this forum and at the particular moment, there were actually only 16 members online. That made me feel a bit better - not so intimidating! I'll be curious to see how many pages there will be in another month or so! Just thought I'd put in those 2 cents.
The number of members does not affect me.
One thing I'm not sure how to work with the rely to me ort to others. I'd like the reply to my reply to a post to be sent to my mail as before. When I use the top right corner it just tells me the posts so I have to browse in the post again
Am I clear ? not sure lol
For now, I think its easier to PM with the question if any...

I agree with this - I was also wondering if there was any way to navigate replies without having to look through the entire post again.

I think I know what you mean, Neil -- and I think it's because the forum has spread out into so many different sections, instead of everything being lumped together. However, please stick with it for a bit longer. As you become more familiar with the forum software, I'm sure you'll come to appreciate its advantages. And there's no point going back to the old forum as that is now unsupported and will be closed to new posts (like the old SCTP).

There is an easy way to do this. When you reply to a post, you will see "Additional Options" underneath the message box. Click on it and it will expand, showing various options, including "Notify me of replies". The options you choose are remembered until you change them.

You can set up viewing to show the newest post first, without having to scroll through all the preceding posts - hope this helps.

You can click on the orange "new" icon to the right of the thread's subject. This will take you directly to the 1st unread post.

Edit: Regarding readership size ... the greater the readership, the more that will benefit from your knowledge and experience. And vice-versa.
I'm a complete newbie on here. I couldn't understand the old site :'( Even browsing/lurking was too hard for me.
The number of members doesn't bother me at all as long as everyone is encouraging and civil* 8) then there is more opportunity to expand my knowledge, which can only be a good thing.

* This seems to me to be the case on all watch forums so far. The rest of the wide wide world of web is just full of disgusting behaviour

Well so much for common sense - guess that should have occured to me - LOL. ??? Thanks for the tip!
What difference could some totally abstract "number" possibly make when all it is, is a few "squiggles" on your screen. Don't be concerned or simply pretend the decimal place is a more "comfortable" place to the left and post away! ;D ;D ;D
