Well I am in the throws of putting two Seiko 6105 81xx after some fortunate buys but one of my cases has some corrosion under the caseback seal which I knew about when I started this journey
My thinking is to use a lathe and cut out the corrosion with a small cutter and tig weld the deeper cut area and them recut the seal area back to original specs
What have u all done when u find a watch with corrosion?
One friend recommended silver solder
Not sure how well that would work
I would love to see what u think

Mine is all hidden when seal is installed but I want it to be 100%
And able to pressure test it

Hi John, I sometimes wonders the same about many 6309 cases i've seen.

IMO,the best would be cold welding (=>2 components) to fit very small holes on the backcase.

Very useful in automotive parts,even in stainless steel.

The first thing I'd do is to use something like citric acid, mix it up and just fill the sealing groove.
When it's eaten the rust, you can see how far the case is pitted and move forward from there.

When it's eaten the rust, you can see how far the case is pitted and move forward from there.
Well that is a great idea
Corrosion is deep but looks clean
I will try citric acid
Any idea where u can buy that?

I would have thought laser welding would be the way to go but the weld and refinish would not be cheap I bet.
Well I did not think laser welding would be large enough
Great idea as i am told jewellers have this capability
I was thinking a local weld shop can do just about anything
The hard part would be to cut out the corrosion and recut the sealing area after repair

Should be available in Chemists/pharmacy or a homebrew wine/beer shop.

So I should mix a solution of this and put it on the corrosion?

Yes, it eats rust and isn't too aggressive on metal, but I'd keep it just in the groove as it can dull finishes. It's very similar to using strong vinegar, and is also great for descaling kettles, car radiators and heater matrixes. Mercedes-Benz used to use it to service car cooling systems, as it's aluminium friendly.
