I wanted to give my older Son Sergio aka #1 a custom mod built to his specs to use while working. He is a Massachusetts Maritime graduate and currently 2nd officer on the bridge, he is about to sit for his Chief Officer exam(s) at 27yo. His requirements were very simple; titanium case, quartz and a strap. I showed him all of the dials and bezel inserts I had in my parts drawer he chose a 20 year old Bill Yao RN SM big triangle dial and one of Bill's 1st run of navigator bezel inserts for the SKX bezel. This was last Nov and I had just picked up my 7548-7000 and fallen in love with the watch and the movement so I pinged Jon @grammerofdesign about the build to get his two cents, no date dial, SKX compatible case, 7546 movement. Jon and I have become good friends online here and I went a bit further and asked him if he would do the build for Sergio and I, he agreed and I was like a kid in a candy store finding all the bits and pieces the project would need. When I saw the yellow chapter ring was one of the case options on AliX I was hooked, Jon found a seconds hand with a yellow tip and donated it to the project. The sword hands are from Harold at Yobokies and the 7546 movement was sourced by Jon. I really thought I had plenty of time as my Son is normally at sea for Christmas and His February Birthday, but an unfortunate accident in the gym and he smashed his big toe into three pieces and has been home all this time studying for his Chief's exam(s) that he takes next month. The last piece of the project was the strap, I loaned him my ghost pepsi 009 that I have on an Erica's Originals MN strap to see if he would love the strap as much as I do, and of course he did. So I ordered one made for this watch and it could not be a better match, everything about this watch is just Kismet, so cohesive and meant to be. My heartfelt thanks to Jon for agreeing to do the build and making it all happen, my only regret is that there are not two of them Sergio is going to give me a hand today working on my '81 Celica GT, it is getting a new carb, and I will be giving him the watch then. He has had some sneak peeks so far but in the metal this watch is fantastic, I had the watch for a day and shot these pics.
The BT
I presented it today, and he loved it of course, he came to help me put an AliX carb on my Celica up at my workshop, I need it as a daily for a couple of weeks, a Weber carb is in it's future when i am retired and have the time. But today it was an AliX carb from amazon and I drove it home today, for the 1st time in about 8 years. So nice to have it running and driving, we own 5 vehicles and now two of them are running and driving, my Wife's new car that we purchased last sat and this one that has been under a tarp for 8 years Now to get my truck happy and then take a break from wrenching.
Thank you! The Celica is an '81 and has a 22R with round exhaust ports, the AliX carb works surprisingly well IMO, it has an electric choke that I only had to convert the plug on and since my Celica has factory AC and I had to bring over the idle advancer mechanism, that bolted right on, the throttle linkage came set up for a cable and the Celica has steel rod linkage I was able to nest the fork for the rod linkage into the cable quadrant. My eventual plan is a Weber 32/36 on a cast aluminum Offenhauser intake manifold and a stainless header and new exhaust, then the crate motor will look like a crate motor and I can clean up the engine bay of all the bazillion vacuum lines. My goal right now is to drive it for a couple of weeks while I take the head off my truck, a '98 T4R with a 3RZ.
My sister had a very similar Celica as her first car back in the early 80s right after she got her license. My Dad used it as a corporate business car for a few years before handing it down to her. If I am not mistaken, the think Toyota used the 22R in their sport truck line as well. I used to pal around with a neighborhood buddy of mine who had a blue 76 Celica ST coupe. We dropped a stainless exhaust header on that car and boy did it wake it up. Those Celicas are becoming quite collectible these days. My favorite was my Dad's silver Mark II 85 Celiaca Supra. What a great GT car and quite the looker.
