I'm on a string of luck in that I've nabbed a few watches off of EBay that are in better cosmetic/appearance condition than the pictures placed by the seller would have led me to believe. Not considering functioning of the watch, what is your experience (Poll).

I've excluded purchases here and at similar boards due to the more 'personal' nature of the transactions, and the incentive to more accurately represent a watch.

Funny, I've had a couple letdowns but most are as good/better than I would think. I voted same as that's the average. I feel like over time, i've learned how to "read the tea leaves" of a shot and discern lighting issues vs wabi, etc. I've also learned to ask a lot more questions!
I put the same, but I ALWAYS ask for additional photos if I am seriously interested in a watch to confirm or disprove things I think I see or need to see. many times a watch has been better. the only time I might have unexpected issues is when I am busy at work and just snipe something without truly researching the item at hand.

Depends

I have rec'd great watches that were represented by pitiful photos, and some clunkers that had beautiful pictures. Go figure! ;)

I've always found watches to look better in person than in pictures.
Sometimes amazingly so.
Can be a mixed bag but I often find hi res close ups can pick up a lot of very minor scratches, dust etc that the naked eye can't see.
For me they're usually better than the pics, but I scour the low dollar items for something that catches my interest. Poor pics are one of the top things that catch my interest. I also do my best to look past crystals to what's underneath.

I agree!

I also have to admit to the habit of actually seeking out those with crappy pics and taking a gamble because they generally go for a lot less than auctions with good pictures. Thinking about it now, while i've bought some that were basically scrap, i've also had more that turned out to be absolute bargains...
In general I love ebay, had some cracking buys and some total crap but thats the fun of it and i never ask the seller questions or ask for additional pictures and I never complain if it turns out a bad buy but I also never offer the seller more money if it is a great buy :)

Like others here I've had mixed results, but I'd say it's more towards the watch being better than expected.
I've had some real bargains like my Breitling Datora, but then this week I picked up a 6139 that wasn't as good as the pictures showed it to be.
