Need help with a Seiko h558-5009

4467 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Chris Galbraith
I recently was given a Seiko h558 by my grandmother, it was my grandfathers watch and has been sitting in a box for fourteen years. The bezel cannot be turned and the buttons are stiff. It also needs a new shroud. Can anyone tell me where in the Portland Oregon area I can take it to be looked at. I would really like to get it up and running again so that I can wear it in memory of my grandfather. I attached a picture so you can see the condition of the watch. Thank you for any help. I don't know anyone in the Oregon area that could service it for you, but you can send the watch in to our very own Spencer PK (Spencer Klein), which was talked about here:

http://www.thewatchsite.com/21-japa...wound-interview-spencer-klein.html#post972410

Article on Spencer: http://wornandwound.com/2014/09/02/i...ko-specialist/

His contact info: [email protected]

As for the shroud, you can get the single best arnie shroud there's available today, made in stainless steel with PVD finishing (so you will never need to worry about the original plastic shroud disintegrating anymore, which is common with this watch) from my friend Wayne Pettit (nick name here: montecristoNo1 ).

Send him a PM: http://www.thewatchsite.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=17823
Or you can reach him by email: [email protected]

You can buy Wayne's shroud and ask him to send to your watchmaker of choice, in charge of restoring the watch. If you go ahead with Spencer, you can request delivery of the shroud directly to him, as well as any other parts that you decide to source by yourself to restore this watch.

Also, I'm sure Spencer will be able source the required parts to bring back this great watch to life, once again.

As for teh crystal for this watch, another member in here called Yobokies (www.yobokies.com) sells a 1:1 perfect reproduction of the H558 Arnie original mineral crystal, only made in sapphire (much more scratch resistant and very beautiful, with an anti-reflection coating on the underside).

The bezel insert can be found at 10watches.com, here: http://www.10watches.com/apps/webstore/products/show/646473

An independent party to help you sourcing any replacement parts for this watch is my other friend, our very own Robbie from MonsterWatches.eu.

You can reach him through here as robbie409 (send him a PM), or contact him directly via his website:

Good luck!

CHRIS

Hell yeah man....you got a great watch and a great memory of your grandfather! Chris above laid it all out there, but I'll add this: I've "restored" two Arnies in the last couple years that were in far worse shape that yours. There isn't really anything to it that's too difficult. Do both the analog and digital functions work? You'll need a few basic tools to work on the case, but other than that it's not rocket science. The bezels are notorious. On these watches for seizing up from years of crud, but they do come loose and with a new gasket they work great. The buttons probably need new o-rings and a lubing as well. Removing and installing the c-clips that hold them in place is probably the toughest part.

I put a oversized aluminum shroud from the eBay seller "armsaver" on my current one, and it looks great. If you can afford it, one of the new DLC'd shrouds would be even better.

Best of luck. If you have any questions, ask away!
Chris

I've done a lot of H558 servicing for members on here and also a few for myself. I carry a full stock of parts but I am in the UK. Armsaver on eBay has fairly good ish metal and plastic shrouds for $50 , Montys got some nice posh ones
crystals gaskets are not available but the original should be fine
Bezel inserts you can get from hongkong

Looks beautiful, indeed.

Could you elaborate a bit more about the full stock of parts you carry for these?

What are the parts we're talking about here?

Thanks in advance!

CHRIS

Good to know. Thanks for the confirmation! :)

You are definitely one of the go-to-guys on these, too. Great to have an addition to the list.
They are one of the few watches that emit a real difference when refurbed

No doubt about it.

I had a full revamp on my two ones as soon as I bought them. The difference in the 'before & after' is night and day. And getting them fully functional to go in the water gives a nice asurance feeling, like it's a real diver once again, and not only a show-off of its once former glory.
