What are the metal tabs on the back side of the strap near the lugs?
Those are tabs to hold the open-ended strap together. One folds the leather over around the bar, then fits the tabs through slots in the flap, and finally folds them out like on a legal envelope to hold the flap in place.

Ahh! I hadn't noticed the flap of leather - or assumed it was glued. Makes good sense, particularly for watches with fixed bars.
