I saw this yesterday on Ebay and wondered what it was (it has been sold now). I have never seen a dial like this on a KS before and curious as to what it is. The three markings, automobile s.e. , iraq and toyota make me think it was made for a toyota dealer in iraq? And also, is it original?

wow. very rare indeed. Would assume it was some special marketing use. I bet they didn't run very many of them .... what did it go for?

Given that the TOYOTA text doesn’t line up exactly centred with the KS logo and the “HI-BEAT” text below it, I would think that the extra dial printing was not done by SEIKO, but added to the dial by a third party after the watch was originally made in the same way as all standard examples of this model were made.

No, but the high-beat lines up with the KS logo. Agreed - Seiko likely had a third party print up the dials for a promotional or internal program. Nice watch to use for such a deal.

That might be true. But the print does look sharp and in the same font. So i wouldnt think its a later redial or anything like that. But curious about the story behind it

I don’t think the extra print is in the same type-face, though it does look similar, like they tried to match it. The “AUTOMATIC” under “SEIKO” is stretched horizontally slightly - you can see it most clearly in the round letters, like the “O”, “U”, and “C”, but also the other letters. If you compare it to the letters in the “AUTOMOBILE S. E.” underneath it, the letters for that are not stretched horizontally, but look narrower - e.g. the “O”s are a lot more round, rather than oval as in the “AUTOMATIC” text above it. The “SEIKO” and “KS” logos, and the “HI-BEAT” text are all stretched horizontally as well. I think the usual printing is original, and isn’t a re-dial. I just think the extra text that you don’t usually see has been added, not by Seiko, after it was made, but that the original text has not been replaced or re-done in any way.

I think that this may tie in with the watch

October '79

Single order for 61,000 Toyota Crown units received from Iraq Automobile State Enterprise. https://www.toyota-global.com/company/history_of_toyota/75years/data/automotive_business/sales/activity/middle_east/index.html
Wow. very nice piece of sleuthing. Well done. That order would certainly warrant a special recognition in the form of a nice watch. This seems like a very plausible explanation.

Let find the watch celebrating 45k Land Cruisers to Iran!

If you consider that the deal was announced in '79, the watch would need to be commissioned and made before that date, a year or more is possible. Seiko produced the batch of watches in '75 and put them in stock, a big corporation needs commemorative watches and Seiko has stock/overstock, so mods the dials to suit in '77 ?????

Yes a year would be possible but 4.5 years would be a bt long. But talks would have been gone on for the years prior of course. So my guess would be that they were handed out earlier than 1979. Thanks for the information and i think what you say prooves there is a link between Toyota, Iraq and Japan.

I am not sure if seiko would have extra stock or batches or watches for commemorative ocasions. I think Toyota just bought a dozen or two of these models and had the dial print added (perhaps by a thrid party).

It's a shame that the old forum has gone walkabout, I'm sure that there were very similar examples with similar chronological gaps.
