So today I attempted my first foray into watchmaking/modding - swapping the day/date wheel of a NH36 movement. This is the end result:

You may notice that the day and date colors don't match. And that's because of today's lesson: don't skimp on tools. I, in my infinite wisdom, assumed that the set of miniature screwdrivers I've used for other projects would have a flathead small enough for the screws in the plate holding down the date wheel. Turns out a 2mm flathead is not in fact small enough to use for watchmaking, and now I have a set of Horotec flatheads btw 1.2mm and 0.6mm on the way.

That said, I actually feel pretty good about myself. I managed to remove the C-clip and original day wheel without any issue, avoided the trap of losing the day adjust wheel when it clung to the day wheel as I removed it, got the new white on black ENG/KAN wheel installed and put the C-clip back into place before pressing on the dial. Day and date are both setting properly. So a bit of a goof on my part, but still happy with the first attempt

(And before anyone says anything I am aware that this is a Malaysian SKX007 dial. I wanted a genuine dial and this one was about 25% cheaper compared to the "JAPAN" dial)

We all learn as we go along and the fellas here have helped so much in the past 2 years, I can't thank them enough for their help.

BTW, did you forget the pic? I don't see one.

Original photo was linked to my Dropbox, which didn’t want to cooperate. New pic should work.

And yeah, never would have attempted this without know there are resources here to help learn

Congratulations on the encouraging result of your first modding endeavor! Your recognition of the importance of the proper use of the appropriate tools is a good sign that you are in the right track...good luck with this exciting hobby!

Good on you and well done. Will this be an SKX with black day date only or will you be changing anything else on it?

NH36 movement, black day/date, AM handset, CrystalTimes case and pilot style bezel, sapphire crystal, custom chapter ring and a TST shroud from John.

There’s a lot going on haha

EDIT: oh, and a jumbo style coin edge crown

I really like the way you have it now with black day/white date. The white date is sort of in line with the white hour markers, leaving the day to blend with the rest of the dial.

True. Once the screwdrivers are in I’ll do the swap for the practice and to see which look I prefer before making a decision

Lesson 2 Learned Today: the 7S26A/B and 7S26C are NOT the same

I purchased the date wheel on eBay, but the listing only said that the wheel worked on 7S26 and NH36 movements. Apparently not given that my Day wheel aligns correctly but not the date wheel. So it was back to eBay to buy a new date wheel, and now I know to check the indexing teeth

Nice way to start my week: correct date wheel arrived alongside my chapter ring. Things are slowly coming together

Nice, interested in seeing the finished product.
I prefer the cleaner look of the K dial actually, specially when modding.

Yes, this. While it may have been unintentional as far as his end-goal, I very much like the look of it.

Hands!!!!

Speaking of hands, mine were definitely shaking when I took this photo. Probably because I’m so excited about how this is coming along. John can’t get the case back to me fast enough
