I have been trying to clear my Seig X2 plus mill for months now as the spindle bearings REALLY need changing.

I have done quite a few mods to the machine since I bought it over seven years ago (bugger where does time go ? ) including replacing all the hand wheels with proper metal ones instead of plastic, stoned all the mating services and gib strips, added measuring strips and improved the axis locking systems and spindle light.

The mill even though it is a hobby/toy mill has performed really well over many hours of work and projects, treated with respect it has done me proud.

For some time now I have suspected the spindle bearings needed changing due to my surface finish deteriorating and the noise coming from the spindle so today decided I shouldent delay any longer plus apart from replacing the bearings its the ideal time for a deep clean and reset gibs etc.

Pictures below are the early stages to the point of knocking the spindle and bearings free which hopefully will be tomorrow.

Nice work John, wish I had a machine shop/shed with mill, drill and lathe - I'd live in there 😁

Its been a productive and somewhat educational day, I knew the setup basically but it was good to strip it and see exactly how it all worked.

Bearings came away from the spindle and housing with the help of a large hide hammer and a couple of pieces of wood for support.

Cleaned all the parts in Gunk engine degreaser and polished the spindle a little before replacing the bearings.

Everything back together, wires tidied up, gibs adjusted and table clocked to see that all was square, new electric switch box required which I will pick up tomorrow but ok for testing.

Connected power after adjusting the drive belt and ran it through the speeds and it now sounds like a Rolls Royce Ford Escort :)
