Last night I was working on a Citizen 8200a movement. I part wound it and laid it rotor down on the table when I noticed that the whole movement was oscillating in time with the balance. Approximately a third of a mm at the crown.
It had not occurred to me before how much energy is expended in the escapement. The movement weighs 11.7 gms and was being moved around it's centre. I initially thought it was the balance causing it by friction in the end bearing but decided it must be the escape wheel hitting the pallets.
I have no doubt several members are aware of this but it was a bit of a revelation for me.
