Not sure how you can be at the ready to place a last second snipe bid given all the different time zones making some auctions ending in the middle of the night and such, plus having real life interferences. I let Gixen do that and free up my life to do other things.

That’s how I get my (sometimes daily) rush! Thrill of the hunt, relying on world time bezels, consulting celestial navigation charts… or just setting an alarm on my phone :)

I’m pretty successful on OFAS (the ‘bay). I haven’t used too many snipes like Gixen. I like to put in a bid early and then watch the bidding unfold. If I really want it I’ll put in a last second snipe.

I used a sniping tool once and at the last moments when I expected to grab the item - due to my max bid being substantially higher than a anything bid so far and beyond what it was probably worth, on a watch or part (can't remember now) that I absolutely positively must win - I lost!

For some reason the snipe didn't go through as ebay blocked the login or something...so never again. I had used it a few times prior to that with success but it then had this issue. Since then, I much prefer bidding in real time at auction end, even if it involves a mid sleep alarm. :)

That's interesting... ebay.co.uk doesn't give you the link to the bidder history, but ebay.com does...

Anyway, in this case, I'd be suspicious of that seller. There are lots of low-feedback bidders on their other lots, who seem to have 90%+ bidding history with just this one seller.
Here's another lot that's just about to finish, and matey boy 0-feedback is currently in the lead. I wonder where it will end?
eBay Item Bid History

That said, I've had zero feedback bidders win auctions of stuff I've put up and they just never paid, meaning you need to relist. I've never had a "second chance" offer get accepted, maybe as the losing 2nd highest bidder might smell a rat ... ie a dishonest seller could puff up the price with a shill account and if they don't sell it to a real buyer, they'd offer it out to the highest actual bidders with the excuse that the winning bidder flaked out and didn't pay.

Well that escalated quickly! I maxed out well before the closing minute

It's quite obvious that the seller wanted a minimum of $650, but instead of doing it honorably with minimum bid he used shill bidding instead. I have seen and reported cases where the same watch was auctioned 5 or 6 times in quick succession in blatant attempts to score top dollar. Ebay unfortunately doesn't give a damn. Disgusting.

Interesting. Another watch being auctioned today - Vintage SEIKO Automatic Watch/SEIKO Sportsmatic Deluxe 7619-7010 SS 25J 1966 | eBay - was "won" by the same 0-feedback seller as was discussed earlier, but he now has 1 feedback score... from the very vendor of both these watches.

I wonder if we'll see that watch appear for sale again?

yep that bidder r***a (1), is also c***c (1)
they placed 9 bids on the 2/69 JDM 6139-6002
I reported the activity to ebay - but of course there was no action taken before the auction ended

Work out the max that you want to pay and bid with 30 seconds to go, that allows time to confirm which takes a few more seconds. Don't bid early, if you already have say ‘”I typed the wrong number” and retract it. I don’t like this but I see it used continually and I never do it myself. A guy exposed my top bid by throwing a grand at it, then retracted saying he meant a hundred. I complained and eBay did nothing. I had to pay up as the guy then rebid one dollar under my proxy. I never made that mistake again. Be prepared to walk away and not place a bid if there are game players at work, there are always more opportunities if you are prepared to wait.
