Collector's Guide To All the Different Seiko Marine Masters Diver Models & Vari

Most Seiko collectors are familiar with the SBDX001 Marine Master. What many might not know is that not only was that model not the first Marine Master, but that Seiko has multiple models with that designation. For example, all the modern tuna Cans (from the 300m one and up are labeled Marine master).

The following is a list of all the different seiko models that are branded as Marine Masters (either on the dial, the hang tag and/or on the caseback):

- SBDX001 (THE Marine Master):

Basically most of the prospex Divers are Marine Masters. Generally speaking its a safe assumption to say that if it's depth rating is higher than 200m (with the exception of the Kinetic GS SBDB001 and the SBDK001 dive computer) and they are in the Prospex range, they are likely to be labeled Marine Masters. A very small handful of models say it on the dial, another small handful say it on the caseback, but most say it on the hang-tag that comes with the watch.

Three new additions to the Marine Master line up have been introduced.

The SBBN017 Tuna Can (the replacement for the SBBN007):

The SBBN015 Tuna Can (Same watch as the SBBN017, but with an added bracelet and a traditional black bezel insert):

And the SBDX011 which is a 000m automatic shrouded diver:

Here is an excellent review of the new Seiko SBDX011 1000m Automatic Shrouded Diver by PeteW of GMT+9:

Re: Collector's Guide To All the Different Seiko Marine Masters Diver Models & Vari

I'm going through a severe case of MM300itis right now ( ) and of course I came back to this guide to drool a bit. After looking through all the watches here, if just the hang tag says it's a MM, then it's part of the MM family
?
Pardon my ignorance, but why? To my eyes that doesn't mean the watch is really part of the line-up, unless of course Seiko groups all these watches under the same family tree. I would expect that MM would be written somewhere on the watch for it to be a true family member. If, of course, Seiko says otherwise, then my point is moot, so could somebody please enlighten me?

Marine Master is a seiko sub-brand used to denote their highest end professional dive watches. they sometimes apply the brand to the watch itself, either on the dial and/or the caseback, but not always. as you pointed out, sometimes they just mark them as such in the packaging.
Re: Collector's Guide To All the Different Seiko Marine Masters Diver Models & Vari

But is that enough for the watch to be really considered part of the family?
I personally would only consider it as a MM if it had MM printed somewhere on the watch or if Seiko officially calls the watch as such.
Re: Collector's Guide To All the Different Seiko Marine Masters Diver Models & Vari

The standard used in compiling the list is how Seiko chooses to brand them, not where they actually place the brand. IN the cases that seiko doesn't make the brand a permanent part of the watch, they are still branding it as such in their packaging, so it is part of the family.

A new Marine Master Model has been announced, the limited edition SBBN021 blue shrouded diver in this picture. The watch has not yet been released to the public.

And another, the 50 piece limited edition Dime MD Edition (a rose gold plated version of the SBBN017 with a custom dial):
