Serious question:what's the oh, so great difference between the legendary GL831 and the straight vent Z-22? Aside from pliability, in my eyes they are exactly the same, shape wise. Cannot understand why the gl831 is so much sought after, really....if nothing else, it's an old rubber strap that can fall appart at any given moment, due to its age. I would not have the guts to trust it to mount on a diver....which makes it only worth for collecting purposes and not practical daily use. Is that what all the fuss is all about? Collecting purposes, only?

Would like to hear the answers from the gl831 fans...

Actually, not just the pliability was different; both the shape and length of the original GL 831s are different than the current flat vent Z-22s. The older GL 831s taper from 22mm at the spring bars to about 19mm at the ends, and each half looks to be about 5-7mm shorter in length, both of which made them more comfortable to wear IMHO. Although, as you said, I wouldn't trust one on my wrist due to age.

There are later GL 831s floating around which came on the 7002 and possibly some other watches. These came in packages marked ZLM29. I have several, and both the dimensions and material are more like the Z-22s.

I actually went to an ocean swim the other week with a well used GL-831
hoocked to a nice 6309-7049, both made it fine.

Nope, sorry. Bought at auction from someone who found it in an old watch shop somewhere in Japan (this was the only one for sale and not even advertised as a GL strap).
