An age old question "You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear" or can you ?

JohnN bought a really poorly 6105 last week for a bargain price but it had "challenges" I will let John tell the story of how he bought it but as soon as i saw it i asked John to send it to me, I thought of it as a challenge to try and get it looking wearable again even though it would never be perfect.

  • On arrival first job was to get the case refinished.
The crystal had been ground and was too damaged to get it polished so i sourced another original crystal and had it polished, looks like new now.
The hands needed cleaning and reluming and came out acceptable.
Under all the damage the dial is a beauty (i was envious LoL).
Note the colour of the bezel pip in the original pictures!! when i took the bezel off the underneath was clogged up with something resembling dried blood !! uuuggghhh after cleaning a new gasket and relumed the pip.
    New case back gasket.
It took a week to do and even though not perfect by any stretch of the imagination i think it will now make a great wearer enjoy your new 6105 John :)

Thanks, they are the original hands, i cleaned and polished them and then did the relume.

I have used Harolds 6105 hands on a mod a while back and they were fine, much better than some others i got from a different source.

Can I ask what process you use to clean them, they look like new and I have more than a few sets I need to do myself.

TIA

Sure as with any hands like these i first of all clean all the old lume off by soaking in Acetone (nail varnish remover), then polish with metal polish and finish off by reluming, surprising some of the results you can get, well worth the effort IMO.

Pukka job you've done there John.

Is that the watch that was being worn by the Medic ?.

And many thanks for doing a great job on my 6105 last week as well ;) , god knows how you find the time to do it all.

Amazing!! I am really amazed not only at the work done but also what had happened to the watch previously. The pockmarks on the case looks really bad but i wonder if the moon-like texture was done on purpose or a result of a workplace accident :-\

Stunning transformation John!! A great example of why some people shouldn't left alone with engravers..It's always a thrill to find a perfect dial underneath a badly scratched crystal..Clayton

The case of the unrecoverable case - or - engravers gone wild.

Heh - I don't know which is more amazing the original damage or the recovery.

Fantastic restoration John. Well done, another 6105 saved. Extinction is kept at bay, kudos for your contribution to 6105 survival and preservation. hehe. ;)
