Surely you can have the stem at any position you like? You just need to rotate the dial (snip off the dial feet, and fit using sticky pads).

No, the day/date will be fine. It'll still show through the dial aperture correctly, which ever way you fit the dial. The day and date rings are concentric with the dial.
