Hello.

I've tried searching the forum but haven't been able to source an answer to my question. I'm hoping the more experienced members here will be able to help me.

I'm searching for a really nice 6138 or 6139, and on a very popular site (where items can be purchased) I noticed an item up for sale. The item description read, "RARE VINTAGE JUMBO SEIKO CHRONOSTOP AUTOMATIC w/DAY DATE 6139-7101".

The watch looks really nice, so I had a closer look. The pointer on the subdial looks different to other 6139 models I have seen. I also noticed that on the dial where I would expect to see "Chronograph" the word "Chronostop" appears.

I have seen "Chronostop" on watches with different model/calibre references. I've not seen the "Chronostop" dial on a 6139 before. (Not that I'm professing to know, because this is all new to me.) So my question is...

Is this watch the real deal? Indeed, is there such a thing as a 6138 or 6139 Chronostop? (I apologise if these are silly questions.)

I hope someone can enlighten me.

not original .. no .. while the watch itself did at the beginning of its life come out of a Seiko factory it has been through harsh times :)

The bits I notice are ..
- repainted hands
- repainted dial lume
- poorly repainted dial (the 'chronostop' isn't parallel to 'automatic')
- heavily refinished case
eg. printing on the case back almost wiped off
- non-original bracelet (this model I think comes on a fishbone)
- vastly overpriced!

before committing yourself to expensive purchases it's worth researching a bit further, looking up pictures of the original watch (the model number should be able to help you) and do consider buying off the SCTP .. it's cheaper than ebay due to lower fees and sellers tend to be more genuine.

cheers!

Good advise. There are so many bodged up, clapped out and frankened 6139 and 6138's on Ebay it pays to spend time researching before buying and avoiding a disappointing mistake.

Be patient and wait for an honest example to come along for a sensible price, usually by auction format, BINS are way over the top IMO.

+1 to that

Nicely put up Dave... besides "Chronostop" term is used by Omega for one of their watches

hey no questions are silly questions...it is always best to research and make sound decisions..these watches can be very costly and very aggravating if you invest in the wrong ones...great that you ask instead of just jumping in the deep end...
