whats the go with this seiko digital, there are 2 distinct types of early digital watches that have the same model number - why is that?

Any pix? I have a 0634-5019. Is this one of the two you mention?

Well, it's because the 0634-5009 number is not the model number but rather the casing number.

It's like 7s26-0020 case which can come in actual models SKX007, SKX009, SKX011, SKX399, SKX401 etc.

The differences are not in the case but the dials, hands, displays, bezels, etc.

first part of the 8 digit case number reflects also the movement number. 2nd half of the case number reflects the case varient

talking about the 0634 here there are 3 variants
5000 ( lcd has black overlay ) and bracelet is different ( open ended ) JDM model
5009 - same as 5000 but closed bracelet and clean lcd
5019 same lcd as 5009 but enlarged case and black ended bracelet ( aka tv watch and the fav agmonst the majority )
