Default 4006-7000 undervalued?

Here's a 4006-7000 I've just bought on eBay. A lovely 27j Bell' from February 1968, in great condition throughout. I hit the buy it now button for just 175. These are not rare watches, actually they are relatively plentiful, but they should be worth more than that. I have bought several Bell's for little money. I guess they get overlooked while people are looking for divers.

Yes, they are. Now shush!

Nice watch you've got there. I own two running "project" Belles - I'd love to have a bracelet for my 4006-6011

You definitely bought it below market value. Should be worth more like 250. At that price i dont really think they are undervalued that much. They were not very high-end or expensive watches back in the day. I think also the high service cost plays a roll in the prices for bells.

They certainly were not high-end watches, but not cheap either. I believe they cost more than a 6105 diver at the time.... which is nowadays worth considerably more.

Comparing sports watches to dress watches is not fair. Vintage dress watches will always be worth a lot less.

What makes you say they are undervalued?

I just think they are a classic vintage Seiko that can be bought for just a few hundred pounds. It's a shame their value, even the more desirable 27j version, is likely to be less than the cost to service it.

I agree, but is that reflective of divers going up massively in price? What were the prices on both ten or fifteen years ago? On second thoughts, I'm not sure I want know, I'll probably cry!

I have had a 4006-7000 myself and dont get me wrong, i liked the watch. As you say, they are a classic and the alarm complication is something special. But for a dress watch Seiko they are already quite expensive. More expensive than a Lord-Matic for example. If Bell-Matics would increase in value they would get into King Seiko price territory. I think those Bell-Matics are priced pretty fairly in the vintage Seiko market, not under or over valued.

There you are, that's the way it is. They sold well in their day and are relatively common so I don't see them rising in value but I like them, especially the 27j variant.

I take your point about them being a dress watch. The fashion for collectors nowadays (including me) is for divers, and due to the fact they were usually bought for the purpose they were intended are the watches that command high prices.

I agree with you.
If you have a November 1966 Bell with dolphin caseback... I am in the market for one!
