Question Is it Japanese?

I am talking about HMT Automatics. At least two of the movements were designed by Citizen of Japan - probably many more! This is a very well known fact! As such; do the HMT's of Citizen Design Origin and Licenced to HMT for production (which they did successfully in the "Millions") qualify as a Japanese Watch?

from wikipedia....says ...in collaboration with....
I would say the watches are still HMT branded...

Watch division[edit]

In the year 1961, HMT set up a watch manufacturing Unit at Bangalore in collaboration with M/s Citizen Watch Co., Japan. The first batch of Hand Wound Wrist Watches manufactured at this factory was released by then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.[4]
In 1972, HMT expanded its watch manufacturing capacity with a set up alongside the Bangalore Factory to manufacture additional watches.[5] In 1975, Watch factory at Bangalore was further expanded to manufacture Main Spring, Hair spring and Shock absorber components.[6]
HMT set up additional manufacturing facilities to produce watch components sets at Tumkur and Ranibagh in the year 1978 and 1985 respectively. Watch factory at Tumkur was partially converted to manufacture Quartz Analog Watches in collaboration with M/S Citizen Watch Co, Japan. To cater to the Niche market, a specialized watch case manufacturing facility was set up at Bangalore in 1983.[7]

Question Indian (HMT) or Japanese (Citizen) - Huh! Wha?

Well!... Citizen clearly seems to claim the movement as their movement. Both 6100 and 8502 movements are clearly cataloged by Citizen in the Sub Catagory as only 2 of very, very many "Miyota Movements." The clear proof of this + a veritable treasure chest of useful information for watch people is to be found at: http://www.citizen.co.jp/miyota_mvt/download/

Both Citizen and Seiko sell millions of their movements to other companies. If you are asking where discussion of HMT belongs, based on how this forum is set up that would depend on the location of the ownership of said company. If it is Japan, it would belong in the Japanese watch section. If not, it would belong in the Non-Japanese watch section. While it is definitely true that there is a link between HMT and Citizen, I do not know if that extends to ownership.

Cool Clarity of forum placement.

Thank You for the clarification. HMT is in India. Ergo; Non-Japanese! I can live with that. However; I must now switch over to the Japanese section as there is a new - old Seiko in the house!

it can get confusing.
I mean, we do have HK based watches that have Japanese movements…
That includes some of our very own members…Whom although based in HK, they use Japanese movements which are in the main section.
