Default 7123 replacement recommendations

Hi
I have a nice simple 7123 8460 that I really like and have been unsuccessfully attempting to repair for some time. I thought I had a replacement movement from the bay but found I had purchased a 7123-7020 with a Miyota movement. So I have given up trying to get a 7123 movement and I am now looking for recommendations on a suitable more readily available (and reliable) movement).

I have looked at the specs for a VX43 and 7N43 and both look to be dimensionally Ok.

Can anyone please advise if either of the above are suitable (realising some fiddling with movement holding rings may be necessary) or suggest other readily available movement alternatives?

Thanks
Rob

I decided to proceed with changing out the 7123 movement and replacing with a VX43. The replacement was relatively straightforward needing only a 11.5''' movement spacer ring trimmed to match the casing internal diameter and removal of the dial feet and substituting with double sided adhesive dial dots. I must confess that I spent almost as much time getting the case back flat gasket seated as I did getting the movement installed!

It may not be a 7123 inside but I now get the pleasure of wearing a classic lined 1981 dress watch that I like and it is now robust and reliable.
Rob

That looks great.
Well worth taking the time to do it. Now at least you can enjoy your favourite watch for many years to come. Where did you start looking to find a similar sized movement, and can you buy matching movement rings and trim them to suit the size of the case? All very interesting, it opens up lots of possibilities if it is as relatively straightforward as yours was.

Actually, I am interested in more info on a 7123 with a miyota movement. Can you give any more info on what movement it was and was it a drop in replacement for the 7123?

Hi Mike
The movement is a 2305 (11.5 "' 4.15mm thick) see attached pictures. The dial looks like a copy as it doesn't have an Seiko part number and is attached with dial dots. The hands are different hole diameters from Seiko 120, 70, 17 vs 110, 65, 20).
Other than that a drop in with a trimmed 11.5L movement spacer ring.
Rob

Hi Dave
A material supply house here in Aus called Labanda has movement descriptions on their site with details of size, hand hole diameters etc. I just scrolled through the list until I found a day/date movement of the appropriate size and thickness. The movement spacer rings I sourced from Cousins and yes you just trim them to suit the diameter you need

Thanks for the update. While not a genuine 7123, still a nice looking watch.

Thank you. Just had a look, they have some good stuff. The movement descriptions are a handy reference.
