I believe I have answered everyone's questions. I just now sent out the contact info for all that has expressed interest. If I missed anyone just let me know, but check your email first.

Really looking forward to this learning experience.

This was posted recently for sale. Might be a good subject for someone that wants one in good shape to do a bit of modding.

After patiently waiting and bidding carefully in a non-inebriated state (ha!), I snagged this off the bay for < $100. Apparently it's in the mail and should be in my hands before end of August.

Any comments, anyone? More pictures of course after it arrives.
Cheers,

That looks the perfect patient for this project Andrew, looking at that i wouldn't think you will get any major (bad) surprises (hopefully).

As usual, from the Philippines. They seem to have a factory of vintage 6309-7040's there...
This particular vendor understood that for this sample, he could sell it without the usual "renovation" work, and I was lucky enough to not get into a bidding fight with anybody over this one, as is so often the case over nicely aged vintage watches.
Cheers,

Hello,
Just wanted to post two pics of two watches I received this morning from a seller in the Philippines. Just so you know, the seller is obviously not one of the well known, reliable ones. To give you an example of a reliable seller: Jose Sotto (watchcooking). In any case, *always* communicate with the seller before you bid and ask about the crown thread, case back thread and lug holes. These three points basically determine if a 6309-704x case is usable or not.

Good

Bad

So... there you go. Do yourself a favor and buy only from a reputable seller. Or better yet, from a seller on the SCTF.

Cheers,

PS: none of these is the "untouched" watch I posted about above. These two have been "serviced" i.e. had their cases overpolished, and not even properly cleaned (there are still traces of the steel polishing green compound, as can be seen on the pics above).

Hi,
Well, the apparently original one arrived this morning, here are a couple of pics:

The dial is clean and I suspect it's original. The hands and bezel insert, given their pitiful shape, also seem original. Bezel turns and clicks, but my feeling is it turns a little too easily, so perhaps the spring under the ball needs replacing.

The crown thread is OK and clean, the crown screws in and out very smoothly, day, date and time can be set, movement appears to be working. Case has not been overpolished and does not show any big ding or scratch. I haven't removed the aftermarket strap yet to check on the lug holes but I am optimistic, likewise I haven't opened the case back to check the movement.
Your comments are welcome!
Cheers,

From what can be seen Andrew that looks like the ideal restoration piece for the project.

I just ordered two watches from Chuck's source, along with one of the accessory sets he was offering. I will post photos and a description when they arrive. I'm having him hold them for a bit as I'm also looking for a working 4205 movement.

I've emailed him asking about one as well... As the 6309-7290 I got arrived in good condition, I need something to really get stuck into to restore ;D

How did you guys proceed in the purchase? did you guys sent money through paypal?

I know some of you bought from him, but still, i'm kind of afraid about not having the eBay 'shield' protecting me..

If you give me the green light, i think i might pull the trigger..!

thanks!

Yep, just paypal. Keep in mind that much of their reputation transcends ebay. User names follow people into forums etc. If he were to shaft someone outside of ebay then his name gets sullied in other places. From all my dealings with him he is a straight shooter. Communicates well, does what he says he will do etc.

Hi Chuck,
If I may ask, what's in the "package" and how much does it cost?
Cheers,

Cheers,
His offer was $58 for the unimproved head, and $70 for new aftermarket bezel insert, set of flat type hands, Seiko suwa dial, cyrstal and rubber strap with 2 spring bars.

Plus shipping of course

As Chuck said, $58 for a 6309 and $70 for a 6309 and the various parts.

Don't forget that Paypal also will protect your purchases. Which is why I will never buy something from somebody as a "gift". I'd rather pay the fees for them.

OK finally snagged what I think may be a good candidate for this project.
These are the sellers pics ... (from Manila of course)
Do you guys see any obvious red flags, the movement looked pretty good to me, what do you think ?

hahah, i bid on that 6309-7040 Ross.. )

Good to know that if its not for me, its for a member from here..!

It wasn't too expensive also..

From what i can see, the dial is correct, dont know about the hands, the bezel insert is aftermarket..!
I also don't know about the movement spacer, I always thought they were metallic..

Congratulations!
