Default A 14K solid gold 17J 6106 DX?

Gentlemen,

for quite some time I had been trying to find more information about this watch (see attached picture 1) as shown in the 1969 US catalogue:
A 17J calibre 6106 with a solid gold case, reference number 54998.

I could not find anything about this watch on the internet and since the combination of case material and movement sounded a little strange anyway, I thought the watch might as well have never been produced.

Until today, when I found the following watch for sale (pictures 2 and 3).

So the 14K solid gold 6106 really exists - but it seems that the watch case was not produced by Seiko.
The caseback does not have (at least on the outside, the inside not being shown in the sales ad) any of the typical Seiko engravements, rather, it is just marked '14K gold B&A' (see picture 3).

I tried to find some information on this. As far as I know, reference number 54998 was a model sold exclusively in the US - and some posts I found while searching the web indicated that B&A was a NY-based case manufactured, also manufacturing watch cases for e. g. the US-export models of Omega.

What would you think?

Best,
Hermann

It certainly looks like the watch in the catalog. Nice bit of detective work so far.

If the watch for sale has a proper gold case, it seems likely that it is a refit. If an 18K goldfilled watch is USD 95, a 14K solid gold watch should cost much more than USD 145, as stated in the catalog.

I did not buy the watch, it was not available to the part of the world where I live.
I was just happy to finally see one in the wild and have the existence confirmed

The watch in the catalog has a 3 o'clock crown, versus 4 o'clock in the example you've found? Is that what I'm seeing?

Also the lugs on the ad appear longer than on the photo

Many thanks for pointing out, I don't know how I can have missed that :-[

So maybe it is not the watch depicted in the catalogue after all...
Well, the search continues :-)

Best,
Hermann

I had missed the crown position as well. The unusual bezel appears to be the same on both examples. It is a curious case for sure.

My Dad's daily wearer for his last 40+ years had that exact same Speidel, with the adjustable width lugs, 10K gold filled tops, and curved end links.

Whatever you do don't just sell it as scrap gold. Some collector will be very interested in having it.

I actually work with jewelry and had my repair man look at it and confirm it is gold. Not plated , filled or bonded. It is unique for sure. 🙂
