Hello SCWF

Evening everyone;

I am a fairly new to watch collecting (about twelve months since I lost my sanity). I have always appreciated nice watches, and having a mechanical engineering background, I've always been fascinated by these tiny machines. It has only been in the last twelve months that I've been able to find out more about this world.

Funds being what they are I have been enjoying exploring the world of vintage. My collecting has taken a bit of a scatter gun approach but recently part of my habit has become focussed on Japanese watches from the late 60's and 70's.

The Japanese nuggets in my collection are:

Seiko Presmatic 5106-7040

Seiko Silverwave 7546A

and probably my favourite a Citizen Cosmotron (perhaps the coolest watch name ever) with a 7803A movement (I have also begun to like electronic watches too).

I will attempt to add some photos at some point.

I have a "few" other watches from elsewhere around the world (including Romania, who knew?).

I am learning how to tinker with watches and am looking forward to the upcoming winter when I can stay in and play.

I look forward to learning more about Japanese watches and hopefully contributing too.

Thanks for reading.

Will

Howdy and welcome aboard.

And +1 to the Cosmotron - more watches need far out names like that.

bradurani 10-10-2019 01:19 PM

Welcome! 70s watches have the best names. Computron, Accutron, Tronosonic, Speedsonic, Time Computer. I too got into electro-mechanical watches when I started because I loved the cool history, names and cheap prices. One caveat though is that if they have a problem, most watchmakers won't service them. You can probably find specialist watchmakers online, maybe even on this forum, but the service cost is often more than the value of the watch. Don't let that dissuade you if you love though, just know that caveat.
Enjoy the hobby. Get a second job. You're going to need it to fund your habit [emoji6]

Welcome Will, well you seem well on your way to horological excess and you have chosen some great pieces to be interested in and passionate about. SCWF certainly has a strong UK community so you are good to go there too. You have come to the right place, enjoy !

Hi Will, welcome. I've got a couple of Cosmotrons as well, and a 5146 Presmatic. You've come to a good place here.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. I know it is a slippery slope. I've only really started collecting in the last twelve months but the watches have ballooned from two to twelve or so. I really need to slow down and be a bit more targeted. I'm just a bit of a sucker for watches with cool sounding names. And I think the Japanese do that best. Helps if they look good too.

In my excitement of writing my first post I neglected to mention a couple of other Japanese watches.

Pulsar "Spoon" W671-4170 which was the first watch I bought for myself and probably begun this journey, albeit twenty years ago.

And my trusty Citizen eco drive BM8180-03E, my camping and general outdoor activity watch. Love the idea of a solar watch. Definitely one for the zombie apocalypse.

Ooh, that would be good. Although having had the back off mine meant I saw things I didn't want to see. Like the lack of movement ring and wrong battery clip. Shouldn't be too difficult to rectify though.
