Default Let's be honest...

So, how many of us have bought or seriously wanted to buy a particular watch after a friend buys that model?

For myself, I tend to buy what I like regardless of the direction of the current, but in all honesty, there was one watch that I hadn't seriously considered until a friend started telling me about his.

The watch in question was the Zimbe Srp reissue...and the friend, well, you know who you are.

Now, this sort of "encouragement" can be both a good thing and a bad thing and I can't judge it either way..so, how about it?

Anyone else have a similar confession to make?

Please name the watch and whether or not you ended up purchasing it after seeing a friend get it.

For what it's worth, I never bought the watch, but I really wanted to and now sort of wish I had.

Best,

Mike

I'd be more likely to NOT want a watch that someone I knew had bought

I don’t have a single person in my “real world” life that gives a lick about watches, or Seiko’s for that matter.

No, but there were a few watches I had to buy for my wife because she liked mine.

i don't have an any watch collector friends in "real" life, just here, if i see a watch i'm unfamiliar with on WRUW then i might think about acquiring one...likewise for watches seen in other threads. seiko's output was and is just so tremendously vast. i have reached my limit on watches, i need to sell before i buy, so that's what governs me...i do appreciate my friends here that show me unfamiliar pieces, but there's no enabling, really, just a bunch of guys with watch addictions already firmly in place...

I have a work colleague who loves watches in general, and would like to buy the new Arnie when it comes out in a couple of months. I may get persuaded to get one of those if he gets one!!

I am always looking online at watches, but when I see something that knocks my socks off, in a WRUW thread, I will then think about acquiring one. That is how I choose most of them. Most recently, that is how I bought my Spb053, which apparently caught several members’ attention, as about 5 of us own it. The decision to buy a particular model has nothing to do with being influenced by another, though. It is based solely on my desire to have a particular piece.

yeah, this is something I need to be careful with. Often the first reaction is just that - a reaction "I'd like to have that watch". But then I think about how it fits into the collection I have and the direction I want to go. More times than not, it's an impulse and I can manage that. However, if it is truly something that will fit into the herd, then I'll move ahead .... I've become less impulsive as my herd becomes more mature.

My Navy buddy is my only ‘real world’ person that’s into watches but they’re mostly Swiss high end. My favorites in his collection are a iwc Portuguese rattrapante split seconds in solid gold and a modern Daytona. I can only dream!
I’m alright with my Seiko’s
