Default SEIKO - GS Astronomical Observatory Chronometer

I am interested in learning more about the SEIKO GS Astronomical Observatory Chronometer. I have the following questions:

1. Is it a sub-brand or a special badge? I've seen some photos of a watch with the words "Astronomical Observatory Chronometer Certified" on the face of the watch.

2. I understand the watches were used in competitions in the 1960s and they were not put into production because they were too fragile and would not withstand standard use.

The problem is I want one and have never found one for sale.

I need some help from smart people.

Thanks,

I'm not smart but I will try to help a bit anyway.
The Astronomical chronometer was certified as it in Switzerland and was sold to public mainly in Japan.
They where not branded as GS, just a Seiko but a good one.
The movement is caliber 45 and is not fragile, the difference is just that the parts where picked carefully and the adjustment was done properly.
Seiko sold 226 of them so they do come up for sale from time to time, if you have some patience you will find yours.

There is quite a lot written about them so an google search will teach you more.
Here is one with some pics recently,

I don't see it right now, but most of the last few years there's been one for sale on Yahoo Japan for about $30,000.

I think you're thinking about eBay not YJ. The one on YJ has been an observatory chrono.

I don't think there is any in the market right now but ask at Watch CTI.
They are the ones who have the best knowledge of these type of watches and might lead you in right direction.

Ended auction what I understand but not sold, maybe possible to throw in an bid?

Very interesting topic.

What I find remarkable: the observatory chronometer was labeled 4520, right - just like the "standard models" whereas the VFA received its own movement designation (4580).

Best
