Default Seiko Watch Ads?

Hi,

Is there any significance to the time that the Seiko watches at set at in the ads? It looks like the watches are set at 10:08 and 42 seconds.

I think as has been mentioned before it is just the "standard" so that you can clearly see all the features and text etc on a dial uninterrupted by the hands.

+1...and you'll notice that almost all watch companies advertise at a time very close to this for 3 handed watches.

a great many watch company have set their analog watches to around that time in their adds because doing so tends to make most of the watch dial's design features visible in the add, while displaying the hands and looking somewhat balanced. The same trick doesn't work on digitals, and doesn't necessarily work on all multi-function analogs.

To add to that, sometimes for multi-function analogs, it's been seen that they even place the hands in "impossible" situations on the dial to achieve better aesthetics...

The truth is that Japanese ad agencies traditionally take a tea break at ten minutes after 10 ... something to do with the Zen of the tea-ceremony, I believe.

The others contributions sound pretty plausible too, though.

If you get the chance, search the archives - there have been a number of posts on this subject, and some interesting comments on the significance of the date, too - interesting reading!
