Default Another FFF mod.

couple of years back I built a FFF mod based on an SKX033. The watch came from the Watch-collector, dial and hands were completely beyond restoration.
So I decided to do a FFF mod.
A 3,6,9,12 dial in Royal Blue was ordered from Dagaz, with matching hands. Alas when the Royal Blue dial arrived, it was actually Purple, and I was disappointed with it.
Anyway I went ahead and built the mod, and when finished i just couldn't connect with it, its been sitting in a watch box ever since, and has had no wrist time at all.

Back in early Dec I went to the Brunell watch fair, where I picked up a Montine 25j dress watch for £5, it just so happens that the movement in this watch is the same as found in the later Blancpain FF, an AS2063.
Hmmm I have an idea, time to re-mod the FFF

Both the AS and 7s26 are 11.5 ligne so in theory the AS should fit the SKX case. Eureka it fits, and the stem would appear to align with the case tube, well by eye anyway. The movement spacer ring would need machining down, so it was sent along with the case to the land of the TST and the man that can.
Thanks John.

So, AS 2063 movement with machined down spacer fitted to an SKX 033 case.

The Dagaz dial was offered to the movement for test purposes but unfortunately the edge of the date wheel was visible through the date window, so a no date dial was the only option. A gilt one was ordered from Dagaz.
A genuine BP Baracuda dial did surface on the bay with a very low start price and I did consider bidding for it, when it got to USD175 I decided not to bother, it sold for $419.

Crown and stem was easily solved by using an AM 7s26 crown from Ramon which is threaded and fitting a new stem for the AS from Cousins, as luck would have it both are tap 9 so no need for stem extenders.

Hand stack height was my next concern, the AS is used by many different makes so there are a few height options, but again luck was on my side and the stack height was ok.
The 7s26 and AS both have the same hand hole size for hour and minute hands but the sweep is different, the 7S is .20 and the AS is .21, which means the sweep will need broaching.
I approached Duncan (The Watchbloke) on this. Don’t ask me how, but Duncan kinda talked me into doing it my self, and pointed me to a set of not very expensive broaches, I also ordered a hand holder although Ducan said I didn’t need one.
Duncan, I have huge mechanics hands and tend to grip too hard with tweezers and crush things.
Anyway I did a practice run with some old dress watch hands and then went for it.
Sweep hand now fits perfectly, although I did order a red tipped hand specifically for an AS just in case.
Many thanks Duncan, I couldn't have done it without your help.

So its all together and running, and I’ve put it on a nice stressed leather strap.
Ive used a generic Rolex Sub bezel insert for the moment until I can find something more FFFish.
There’s still a couple of issues to sort out. The case back sits directly on the movement ring and I had to reduce the height of the ring to get the case back to screw down fully, I think the ring is still a bit too high so I need to reduce it some more and fit a wavy compression shim between the ring and case back.
The AM crown doesn’t screw fully home, even with the movement out of the case, the original does, so I need to source another crown that fits better

One FFF (Fully Frankened Fake) mod.

The purple dial now resides in a 7002, and I still cant connect with it.

Apologies for the upside down pics, they are the right way up on my puter! Windows 10 glitch?

That's a great result, looks really good. I guess you know Harold does glass FF style bezel inserts?

Terrific so far Ivan and we all know it only gets better from here !

Remember my "61MAS" build used an old crystal tension ring, with a small bite taken out at the crown, to substitute for a movement ring. I learned it by observing how the seller of a Mumbai Special got one of my cheapie ebay purchases to work. I suggest it fully since, when done carefully, it seems to work and frankly ("Franken-ly"?) I have no other option.

Well done sir. And the distressed leather looks the part to a Tee!

I was under the impression that Harold's glass FF inserts were for the larger divers and the SNZH.
Ill drop him a mail and see if he can come up with something.

Unfortunately they are all too big for the SKX033/31.
I need an internal dia. of 30.5mm and external 37.8mm

Very nice. Good job of sticking with a watch that was gathering dust.
