Default Vintage Style Mod

I found this old beat up 7009 on the bay of E, and felt like the dial had some character. Decided to build a mod around it. Sort of inspired by Aquaman Mike's bluefin, I like the idea of breathing new life into an old dial. I also really like the day wheel, which most of the aftermarket dials cover up. Anyway, it looked like this in the auction pic:

I couldn't tell how much of the damage was on the dial vs the crystal. Looked like this a few weeks later once it arrived from India:

Dial in pretty rough shape:

Wasn't sure whether to keep the 5 badge but the rodico made the decision for me, picking it up off the dial while cleaning.

For the hands, I picked up a couple different sets from Otto Frei. I planned to try to add some "patina," so at $4 a set, seemed like the way to go. Decided to go with the Mercedes/submariner style after the test fit:

To add the patina, I gave them a soy sauce bath. No color retention after an hour, though, so I put them on a piece of foil into the oven. 5-10 minutes under the broiler evaporated the soy and gave them good color. If it's too dark, you can take a little off with a damp paper towel:

Pleasant surprise was the dial fit the 7s26 movement perfectly without having to clip the feet. Here was an eyeball test next to the one I took off:

Bezel was gold tone IP redneck one from one second closer /dr. Seikostain. For the insert, I had a few options:

Went with the blue and gold ceramic insert from DLW watches. Didn't realize when I ordered it, though, that it is convex, not flat. There is a gap between the insert and crystal that I don't love.

Assembly was pretty straightforward. Only hitch was I absolutely mangled the hour hand doing something stupid. But it sorta matched with the worn vintage look of the beat up dial, so I went with it:

I enjoyed putting this one together, and have been enjoying wearing it. Went with the strap code super oyster bracelet. That is a double dome sapphire crystal from crystal times and a brushed chapter ring from Dagaz. I have ordered a gold chapter ring and extra thick crystal from one second closer, and I'll update the post once I get them in. In the meantime, some wrist shots. I think the dial looks nice in the sun:

Nice vintagy style mod!

I like the case and the large crown on that one too. You could probably find a few other dials that will work and switch things up some from time to time.

I'm always changing things on mine. It's hard for me to ever be completely done even when it looks done.

I might have suggested that you get the case and crown coated in gold TiN but you would need a matching bracelet. It looks fine with the stainless case and bracelet the way it is.

Cool wabi mod - the thinking is so different for something like this, it takes a imagination with a twist.

Thanks, Mike. I was looking for a gold crown, and have thought about a two-tone bracelet. I may explore the gold coating option.

Thanks, feca67. A lot of the fun is exploring all the different components to use, and part of the appeal is putting together a combination that nobody else will have.

Thanks, TGP and bofff.

A post script on this project. I ordered some gold chapter rings (polished and matte) and an ultra-high flat sapphire crystal, all from one second closer / Dr. Seikostain.

After a test fit, I decided I actually liked the matte silver insert after all, as it ties in the case and bracelet.

The crystal is great. Fits the DLW ceramic insert perfectly. It's fairly thick (approx. 4.3 mm), so it took a few tries to get it fit flush.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with how this one turned out. Hope you like it, too.

Cheers!

-Lane

Hi Mike,

Thanks for checking in. Nothing new to report on this one except that I have been frequently wearing and enjoying it. Have a couple other projects in mind / in the works, though. Here's a teaser on one, will probably do a longer post soon ...

Anything new to report with your school of Tuna mods?

Best,

Lane

Eli: thanks much for the kind words. I enjoyed putting this one together and have been enjoying wearing it.

DAHASCO: I thought about it, but based on what I could gather from pictures and measurements from crystal times, there would be a gap between the insert and edge of the crystal. That one is about 4.2mm flat. The bubble dome, I think, is like 4.6mm at the thickest point, but slopes does to be flush with a flat insert.
