Default Orient Yellow Beast Review

Authored by Rob (1/2005)

I've been looking for a nice yellow dial diver but I'm not that crazy about the SKXA35. I was browsing around eBay and found the Big Time store and his array of Orient watches. Someone on this forum commented a couple of days ago about how much they like this line of Orient "Dive" watches so I took the plunge and ordered one.

It's a pretty cool watch for $128 US delivered. It looks a little like the Yellow Monster that we all know and love. It's a big watch (43mm & 46mm with crown) and weighs quite a bit. It has a shroud that is integral to the watch case. It's not a true Diver's watch, just water resistant to 200m. It has a locking crown and a non-locking date adjust button at 2 o'clock. The lume seems to be good but the overall legibility of the watch suffers because the lumed hands blend into the yellow background. The bezel turns with a nice quality click, but won't exactly line up with 12 o'clock. This is the first watch I've had with a see-through back. The inscription on the caseback says: WATER RESISTANT ALL STAINLESS STEEL, EA EX04-C0 CA, ORIENT WATCH CO, LTD. The movement looks nice and the rotor is a nice copperish color. The rotor is inscribed with: Orient 21J. 46G41 JAPAN.

I like the power reserve indicator at the top of the dial. It lists the hours of 0, 1, 10, 20, 30, and 40. It actually seems to work. The watch was not running and indicating 0 when I got it. After a little shaking it moved to the 1 hour mark, and with about 30 seconds of shaking it moved to 20 hours. Later, after wearing it for a couple of hours it indicated a full 40 hour charge.

The bracelet is nice and beefy too which helps balance the watch on the wrist. The bracelet has small, polished connecting links between the brushed main links. Overall it's a nice, inexpensive automatic watch.

I agree with the reviewer's remarks, but I would like to add that this is one of the most accurate automatic watches that I have ever owned.

Mine is accurate to within 2 to 3 seconds a day.

I have the orange version which I have been using with a Seiko rubber strap, the steel band wrapped in plastic and sealed away safely.

It is a stunningly beautiful timepiece as well, which sits very comfortably on the wrist.

Reviewer's pictures show just how nice this watch really is.

It is one of my favorite auto divers.

Cheers

One of the "biggest bang for the buck" divers out there. Comes in great dial colors (how many divers can you find with a red or even a TEAL dial?!)

Only minor failing that disappointed me was the lume. As per usual, Orient lume is not Seiko level. Just minor nit-picking.

Killer watches!

You do realise you are replying to a SEVEN year old post
Also, I don't think he's been on for a good few years or more.
