About over a year ago I was in the market for a minimalist / vintage inspired analogue watch for a daily wearer. In my line of work my hands and wrists are constantly exposed to water, heat, sharp / blunt edges to bump against. Hence this watch would be a pseudo daily beater. I did not want to spend too much, and getting a vintage watch was out of the question. I was considering the Orient Bambino because I loved the classy and timeless design but I was hesitant because of its uncommon lug width (21mm) and its price - though they are very good value for the money, but it was above what I wanted to spend on a daily beater.

After a few more hours trawling the Internet, I chanced upon the Orient Capital. I did more research on it, read up on the specs and pulled the trigger. It was a no brainer, really. So after a year of ownership, here’s what I think about the watch:

Dial and Case:

The slightly off white coloured dial with a satin finish, along with the slightly domed around the outer edge completes the retro look and feel of the watch. The applied baton indices with the minute markers, along with the sword shaped hour and minute hands give the watch superb legibility. At the 3 o'clock position is the day date window - and personally I like watches that tell the day as well as the date so this is a bonus.

'ORIENT' is printed at 12 o'clock, without the lion shield emblem. Not sure why the logo was excluded, perhaps it is to add to the minimalist look. The case is simple and clean. Measuring 40.5mm sans crown in diameter, it is slightly on the large size for a dress watch.

However with a thickness of a mere 7.93mm it watch is slim and sits very comfortably on the wrist. The case has a polished finish on the top, sides, caseback and lugs.

I like how lugs protrude straight out from its perfectly circular case with flat sides, a design reminiscent of classic watch designs from the 60s. I also like the fact that the lugs are 22mm apart, because not only is it easier to source straps of this width (as opposed to 21mm of the Bambino), I can use my already ample nato strap collection from my divers.

I am a sucker for domed crystals, so that feature i immediately appealed to me. I am happy to say that after wearing this watch almost every day at work and having had several direct knocks against the crystal, it still remains crack and scratch free.

The crown seems to be disproportionately small compared to the case. But nonetheless, I've had no issues with operating it.

Movement:
The Orient Capital is powered by the Cal. HS911 Quartz Movement. Nothing much to review here - it's quartz so it should be fairly accurate. I've not timed it for accuracy though, and I don't intend to.

Strap:

Supplied with the Orient Capital is a 22mm leather strap with faux croc prints. To me the strap is the only disappointment to the whole package. I don't mind glossy leather straps but these ones are stiff and show premature signs of wear (note the crease) straight out of the box. Fortunately I had already planned to fit various nato straps to the watch even before getting it so problem solved.

Conclusion:

The CUG1R009W Orient Capital Quartz Analogue Dress Watch oozes class in spades for very little money. Its finish, build quality and style punch way above its price point. If you’re looking for a nice classy looking watch as a daily wearer / beater, this fits the bill perfectly. My only advise is ditch the leather strap for a better quality one, or mix and match it with a bunch of colourful nato straps!
