Default eBay restricted my messages for a week

So I typically list my cell phone number in any listings, hoping people take the hint and we can work out a better deal via PayPal invoice. I guess since they're no longer agitated eBay has started dropping the hammer recently on this type of activity.

About a month ago I got a call from an email concierge warning me about selling outside of eBay. They were really nice and tried to make it sounds like they were protecting me as a seller. A few weeks later I sent a message telling someone to text me and tried to sneakily insert my phone number....I hit send and get slapped with an automatic message from eBay about selling outside of eBay and my message functionality is suspended for seven days. The worst party about it was I had a couple of watches listed and people were sending me messages asking questions I couldn't respond to. It appears that eBay is getting more clever along with more greedy! Take note people!

Yes they will clamp down on this..

Although I think they should be a little more tolerant of this, as of course it is only about money.. I also see it as a service that allows you a decent audience and as a result it should be the case that the item listed there sells on there.

I used to write "hit me up on SCWF as GrammarOfDesign" but nobody ever took the cue so I stopped doing it.

I still do that every time! I think it's worked once or twice over the last couple years.

I agree with everything you say here, EXCEPT that they're not greedy. Their actions over the past five years definitely point to greediness, most likely to their own detriment eventually as competition increases.

well this should not be news to anyone....most businesses WANT to make money....we all know their costs and rates....why should anyone be shocked that they see u are working outside of them for sales?....i have been in business for close to 30 years...and if one of my vendors worked outside of my business to make money and skirt my share...i would be very upset....put the shoe on the other foot...would u want sellers to do this to you?....of course not...so the better question should be...find a better platform to sell your products that you get the same exposure and u get all the profits....i would say start a website and promote it....that way it is a win/win....just my 2 cents....Ebay is a double edged sword...we all love it when it benefits us...but not like it when they do stuff like this....i do not fault anyone who runs a large corp who benefits us all like this...
i can not say i like most of what they do...of course not....but like most of us...we all buy sell and trade.....we need these outlets to do that....God Bless,John

I agree again. eBay is in the business to make money and has shareholders to answer to. I'm in the watch trading business / hobby and I'm just trying to minimize costs like eBay's, so if I can use them to market and not pay them on every transaction, even if it flies in the face of their rules, I'm fine with it.

Well said. That is how a free market works, you can always leave if you don't like it.

When I want to send someone my email address thru the ebay message system I have a photo of it and attach that to the message. Their message scan software does not catch it that way.

I also was notified a couple months ago I was admitted to their concierge program. A couple weeks later I was trying to return an international strap that was too short. The concierge people called me and told me to keep it and they just texting my funds anyway. So they don't TOTALLY suck, I was blown away by that one....

Very resourceful. I think it will land you in hot water if caught, but the question would be "will they ever catch on to that technique?

Brilliant really.

What about the old:

If you want you can connect using this in your software

bob d2ot smith funny at sign then g2mai2l dot com but make it all one big word and take out the 2's

Something like this has worked for me in the past.

I think that type of obfuscation (which you highlighted in blue) would baffle the majority of customers. Some might even be put off.

Agree that the image idea is an excellent work-around. Also agree that it may lead to more severe consequences as it is knowingly sidestepping their system.

That said, what you did above is essentially the same class of infraction – might as well just use an image.
...Though, I'm speculating here, it's possible that the more images that people start including in replies, the more they may focus their efforts on developing recognition systems to combat this behavior? How common is it for people to exchange images in their correspondences?

I just leave on eBay and suck up the fees. Only ever made a few outside deals in the past, but as things are, and based on what I used to see where most scams were based on working outside of eBay, I'm happy to just pay the dues.

Otherwise the only thing I can think of that would be easy, and probably more beneficial to selling, and is something I've wanted to do for a while now, is stick a link to a YouTube video and let that be a contact method.

That's a great idea, and it may indeed fall into a grey area with respect to conduct.
Assuming that the embedding of video in eBay descriptions is supported. I don't believe I've ever come across this before.

Yes i find the same myself with ebay.
Unfortunately your prospective purchaser can not view the item prior to any purchase.
Ive been slapped on the wrist and banned for 2 days for trying to give out my details.
You have to put up with it,i do like ebay and would be lost without it for my dealings.

I spell out parts of my cell phone number for people to text me with any questions. Also if you point them to Watchuseek to can provide your handle and anyone who uses the site gets the hint and pm's me based on our mutual disgust for eBay fees.

For example from one of my recent listings:

Also will consider trades with cash coming to me if you have feedback on a watch forum. Please no Invicta or fashion brands. I prefer blue or white dials.

For quickest response, you can also PM on watchuseek.com (handle: bettenco) or text me at 3one4 3four6 seven4seven5.
