Hello,

My name is Jim I am new here but have owned and used Seiko Watches for over 40 years. I would say that I am a user more than a collector but I would like to get some working Automatic watches to basically build my skills on watch repairing.

To that end a Seiko 5 from India would fit my requirements? I have a recent Seiko 5 (SNSX77) I wear almost daily at present and confess that I love it. So much so that I recently bought a Braun Toothbrush charger to top up the battery, for it is a battery now despite what the Seiko marketers try to tell us, on my Seiko Kinetic as it gets worn less and less these days, as do my other watches, but I guess the novelty could wear off in a while.

I have looked at the Buy it Nows on several of these Indian sellers and the price of around 16 (GBPounds) is sort of lunch for 2 money, so I am happy to spend that on a try out, any user names or watch Calibre numbers I should look for please.

Many thanks Jim (PS I won't be offended if you call me a fool or a cheapskate both equally apply :-) ).

If it’s just for learning the movement servicing then maybe BUT make sure the movement is genuine Seiko! If you see the thread in main section I’ve posted a pic of one of these Feiko’s and the movement is even fake despite it supposedly being a 6309.

Smash the dial and hands with a hammer though.

Unless I know the buyer and am confident of the product, I won't buy a watch from an India seller - you just don't know what you'll get.

Not prejudice - just happens to be where the majority of the junk is at, and a lot of it. Buy at own risk .....

and yes, past experience.

have you ever tried to return a watch to an Indian seller - even with pay pal it is very very very difficult

Buy a watch lot from thewatchcollector for $25, it's not much more but you'll get 4 or 5 movements to play with. Just pick the lot that looks the best.

I bought a watch from India before. The movement didnt fit the case/dial and was just jammed in. The date wheel isnt sitting correctly. It was only about $30 so not too much money lost.

Don't hate me for giving this dead thread the defibrillator but....

There is an Indian restorer (it's what he calls himself) on Facebook that has some pretty rare Swiss pieces from a brand that I collect (ok, it's Enicar, and yes, please PM me your enicar sea pearls)

Problem is, photos are always terrible so you can never tell if the dial was refinished (which to me is a deal breaker). When I request clearer pics from him I get prompt responses of equally poor quality photos, from different angles. I've asked outright if they were re-dials but he won't admit to them

Not stigmatizing India. There are tons of re-dials here too, and many more outright fake dials (Scuba-Loy anyone?) . India is a great source when you're buying cheap, buying for practice, buying for parts. If you're after the more serious stuff, well as they said, you get what you pay for
