Default Nice try.

Just about to sell some simulation pedals on eBay to a buyer and he asked for a BIN and we eventually did a deal.

So I change the listing to buy it now and he paid and said he had issues with it as it's saying it's sold but the transaction wouldn't go through and that he will be home in half an hour. The transaction hadn't gone through. Correct. But also the listing had not been purchased...

Thinking about this at the time I know this doesn't bode well.

About half an hour later it's sold and he had paid.

Thank you blah blah for waiting blah blah I've just paid blah blah.

Reason I'm annoyed is that his next message was:

'oh in my haste to pay I've inadvertently put my old work's addrss can you send it here 'blah blah address' instead please many thanks.'.

I think this was a scam but instead of stating as such I didn't want him to get his back up and then leave negative feedback so I replied 'Hi Adam, ah that is unfortunate. Hang on I'll refund you and relist and you can sort the address out'.

So I cancel the order and he gets a refund before I get any annoying messages.

I've reported him for the change of address scam which I think is fair enough. Or am I paranoid....?

I should say I used to work for PayPal (sorry) just as a claims agent (ugh) and I had to deal with elderly people being scammed for thousands to a whole lots of awful stuff to just innocent users who should have known better but cant be blamed.

This scam was one of the most typical scams.

Never ever send to an address PayPal or eBay haven't given you.

Anyway I left it cordially but I reported him and I really wanted to tell him what I thought... Of course he could have been genuine. But I didn't want to find out.

Bodo!! You worked for them? :'(

Lol, I worked for WalMart once until I saw how bad they were. On the flip side, I've sold lots on Ebay over the years and it sounds like a scam to me. Good on you, I worry about such things myself and cancel bids from low feedback bidders or just guys that ask stupid questions all the time.

I would never have questioned the address switch. Ha thanks for the advice. What would have happened- you send it and then they claim they don't have the stuff?
It's weird how most scams are prefaced by a huge back story....

Exactly Cam. PayPal need to see proof of postage match the actual address on the transaction. So on those cases I'd say why did you send here. Buyer told me to.. Well I'm sorry but PayPal can't help. In a nutshell and obviously less blunt.....

But yeh have to be careful with that.. Maybe he was genuine but not worth the risk. No cover at all if you do this..

The saddest part is that we even have to worry about all this, you know?

It has always been pretty clear from PayPal to only ship items to the address given by their PayPal account. If it truely was a mistake and this person had just moved it takes about five minutes to update your PayPal information. Either was going to claim never received or it was a stolen PayPal account.
I have a couple of times shipped to a different address but the buyer was overseas and wanted it shipped to a family member here. It went smoothly but this post reminds me that if something happened it would have been my problem for not shipping to the buyers shown address.

I got scammed last year. Thankfully Paypal was very quick to investigate and got my money refunded. I was quite impressed. Thought it would have been a terrible process and lots of red tape.
