Found 6105-8110, want to restore...
« on: September 05, 2010, 12:10:31 AM »
I came across my father's old 6105-8110 earlier this week.  I remember loving this thing when I was a child, so I was ecstatic to learn that not only did he still have it, but it still worked and was in fairly good condition.  The original band was gone (not suprisingly), but everything else on the watch appears to be completely original.  I went ahead and replaced the crappy metal bracelet that was on it with a rubber dive strap, and am thinking of trying to resotre it.  Here is a photo:

The bezel still looks great, there are a few minor nicks and scratches on the case, the crystal has shallow surface scratches, and the dial and hands are pristine.  Additionally, the "twist lock" mechanism of the crown still locks, and the luminous paint still glows faintly but discernably!  It tends to run quite slow (-5 min a day), but that could be because it isn't fully wound.  The watchmaker I took it to removed the case back and told me that there was no oil at all in the movement, so that could be causing it to run slowly as well.

If I do try to resotre this thing, I'd like to do it with all original (preferably NOS) parts.  As I understand it, that is virtually impossible mainly because NOS crystals, straps, and crowns are so hard to come by.  At a bare minimum I'd like to get my hands on a NOS crystal and pressure test the watch to check the condition of the crown seals.  Will I be devaluing the watch by restoring with NOS parts?  With aftermarket parts (i.e. aftermarket crystal)?  As I understand it, this model is fairly collectable and I don't want to do anything to reduce the value.

Thanks in advance for the responses!

I'd get the movement serviced, replace the crystal, and replace the seals.  I don't think it needs anything else.  Swedefreak sells a crystal that's identical to the original.  It's tricky to replace the crown seal (it wasn't meant to be replaced), but not impossible.

Best of luck!

Myles

EDIT:  The crystal seals are normally in pretty good shape and don't need to be replaced.  Your watchmaker can make that determination.

Congratulations..! The crystal scratches can't be buffed? is it too hard to polish the scratches out? I'd get the movement serviced in a great watchmaker, try to source some gaskets and that's about it, the watch looks in great condition...!

congratulations once again!

Great that you have it, that it's still with it's family - as others have said, a cleaning/oiling, new seals and a new crystal - I wouldn't do anything else.

Wear it and enjoy it!

How Wounderfull, from your Father to you and remembering her when you wre Young IMO Tahts as good as it gets.

All was said as to what to do, She looks in Great Condintion, would love to see the case back and or her Year. That would be the First two #s in the Ser #
 as in 340967 =1973 April.

Matter of fact Jonathan "Sweedefreak  is thinking of Making a 1to1 Copy of a Very Special OEM 6105 Crystal besides the One he now has that Is perfect.

What I would just add In case you are one that would Care about this??/ when she is sent to be serviced  she could be Relumed?

Your Dial and Hands are Very Nice in there org Condition, and many would hate to see her Touched, and I understand that and Respect that BUT
Some as My self Prefer my Dials on Watches I WEAR  to be Relumed, I mention it just incase, There are times the LUME itself is Decaying Not /w Black Grung
but just Dried up and Flaking, reluming deals with that.

Must be a Great Story from your Dad, to the origin of the Watch?

Good Luck w/ her. Very Special

A bit more information and another pictiure...

http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/4033/20100905003.jpg

It was made in July of '76 and was used on dives until the mid-eighties.  My father was wearing it when he proposed to my mother (underwater).  I had been wanting a watch for months and researching makes on the internet when I remembered that he had a watch I used to love as a child.  I asked him if he still had it.  He said he did and offered it to me.  I took it into a store to have it restored and the gentleman behind the counter informed me that it was a collectable and could be worth quite a bit of money.   Upon hearing that, I decided that I did not want to accept a gift on false pretenses (i.e. my father not knowing the value) so I decided that I would fix it up and return it to him.  With respsect to reluming the dial, I think I am going to avoid that for the time being.  My previous picture was a bit blurry, but I can tell you that the dial and hands are mint and I don't want to risk screwing that up.  I would like to replace the crystal, so I was wondering if Swedefreak's version was made of the same Hardlex that Seiko uses or mineral glass, or are they the same thing?  I'd like to return the watch to diving condition as my parents may be taking a trip to the Galapagos and my father expressed interest in diving there.  Would a pressure test be able to tell me if the watch will still function for its intended purpose?

On a side note, restoring and returning the watch did leave me with a bit of a problem in that I still didn't have a watch to wear.  I had been thinking of pulling the trigger on a nice Marathon GSAR, but after looking around the shop I took the 6105 to, I found exactly what I was looking for.  Needless to say I am now the proud owner of a SKX173.  On top of that, I've been bit by the Seiko bug and it is only a matter of time until my collection starts ballooning...

Give your Dad the new SKX173 with the new seals and already pressure tested,to wear on his dive trip.

Leave the much more valuable 6105 at home in a safe place on your nice dry wrist. ;-)
