6119 Reincarnation
« on: March 31, 2010, 10:15:34 PM »
A few months back I popped into the localSalvos op shop (thrift store) and in a box of junk was this rather sadlooking old 6119:

I thought "why not?" and picked it up for AU$5.

I set about restoring it, purchasing a replacement crystal from thestates that, despite the seller's assurances, just didn't quite fit. Iposted here about this and Jonathan kindly sent me the correct crystalfree of charge, refusing all my attempts to compensate him!

Thanks Swedefreak.

The next issue was the movement, which was badly worn (and will soon becompletely stripped as a learning experience. Looking through theTrading Post I came upon Dennis's ad for a 6119 movement for AU$10.When I contacted him he sent me the movement, also refusing to take anypayment.

Thanks Dennis!

After a bit of TLC the watch ended up like this:

Nice enough, but blue dials (and 5s) don't really do it for me, so offto 10watches (on Noah's birthday!) and a dial and hand change laterI've ended up with this:

The next step was to spray the chapter ring black, which increased the apparent size of the dial and add a fantastic NATO from Timefactors which really completes the whole package...

Great mod there. Really unique and really KOOL!  :o

If you still have the dial and hands, I wouldn't mind taking them off your hands so to speak! LOL!

I've a couple of 6119 project watches needing parts myself!  :D

Nice work.  The colors are very well balanced.  Good work.  BTW, what did you do with the original vintage hands?  Wouldn't happen to still have those would you?

Stellar job Alex!

Incredible mod, Alex!  (But I have to admit I liked that old SEIKO 5 look, too.)

Thanks everyone for the sudden surge of interest in this old one and the great comments. There was something right about the balance of dial and hands that I liked so much I used it again on my 6309-7040 quartz mod:

Sorry Gabe, the hands are on this one, which has just had a bezel transplant and is on my wrist as I type (4 days in a row - a recent record!):

I'll post pics of the update on the original thread (http://www.thewatchsite.com/index.php/topic,481.0.html) if I manage to get the camera out over the weekend.
