Help with 6308 crystal gasket fitment
« on: February 10, 2013, 01:55:33 PM »
I'm having some trouble with a 6308-8030 that I'm part way through neatening up.

When I popped the old crystal out, the associated gasket and retaining rings came out in a hurry, so I wasn't 100% how they went back.

I have, starting from the case, a case recess, thin retaining ring with a tiny step, flat gasket, crystal, outer retaining ring/bezel. The o-ring is pretty much same of as the crystal so it must seat flat against the back of the crystal. I had assumed that the tiny step in the inner ring was meant for the o-ring to locate in, but it doesn't, so I'm not 100% on the purpose of the step.

Trouble I'm having is after fitting a new crystal, twice, both times the seal has moved a touch such that you can see it sticking out a little under the crystal.

Does it sound like I have the parts in the correct orientation? Is it just a matter of trying to ensure everything stays dead central, in place, whilst clamping down, to prevent the gasket moving around?

Seems like a poor system, but then I'm used to divers which usually have a more purposeful sealing arrangement.

Shame I can't find a casing diagram  :'(

A picture might help, but I think I know what you are referring to, having just disassembled a 6306-8020 that has a similar setup to what you describe.  From what I can tell, the crystal gasket does indeed sit on the outside of the lip of that inner ring (make sure it is facing the correct way.  You may need to stretch the gasket temporariy with your fingers if it tends to jump up over the inmer lip.  Also, you may need to replace the gasket as the old one could be incorrect or deformed with age.

Thanks Noah, I gave it another go not long after I posted and I was third time lucky!!

I think the gasket had possibly grown a small amount, but still sealed against the glass ok. I think it was just down to a tony bit of movement when clamping,  as the retaining ring was rounded,  if it wasn't dead centre in press I think it was pushing the glass & gasket over a touch.

All sorted now, and looking much better for it!!
