My first save of 2013...
« on: January 02, 2013, 09:36:23 PM »
Last year TheTigerUK gave me, among other things, a good 6309-729x case.
Well, that just begged to be filled and populated.

I had a 6319 movement from a dress watch that was dredged up from the deep by Ramon and was in a lot of 4 such pieces. The 6319 was completely torn down, cleaned, inspected, had two parts replaced, was lubed and reassembled and waited for further use.

John's case was bare bones and even had the click ball tube all nicely cleaned out. It now houses a piece of spring bar spring and a Bic pen ball(works beautifully).

I had another Ramon 6309-7290 treasure that someone had let the ocean into and it provided a decent chapter ring along with the crystal, crystal gasket, crystal retainer ring, case back and a usable bezel(insert may get replaced). I couldn't use the donor case as the crown tube looked like the end of an exploded musket barrel  ???  so all those parts were swapped. The OEM, Japan dial which is now on my other 6309 left me with only an AM dial for the time being.

So, with everything all assembled and the 'new' 6319 motor; this is what I have now...a perfectly working and functional watch...

The next time I have the lume kit out, I will redo the hands on this one and the other one.

A big thank you to John for being such a generous soul :great:

I won't be for very long either. Just want to do a bunch all at the same time since the clean up is a bit onerous.

It will look much better when the cosmetics are done. For now I'm just tickled to have found a use for John's case and a really nice 6319 movement  :)

No and as much as I hate to admit it; his 'classic' 6309-729x dials are pretty good compared to this one.
I think it was on another 6309 that I got from Ramon but don't remember or it could have been a gift from when I got the first 6309 with the OEM dial that I scrubbed all the bad stuff(and good stuff) off of.

BTW...may break from the forum seems to have mellowed my position on Oyl's creations. Either he hasn't been doing as many or else I've become brain numbed towards them  :))
In fact; I'm morbidly curious about his 'reverse' dial models. I would love to have one to take apart to see how he engineered this trick  >:D

I saw that you guys were not having any fun with Oyl and the mods seemed bored so I just had to come back  :))

I wish I could save them all but alas Seiko made too many and some will not survive  :'(

But modders are doing a good job of saving many souls  :great:

I can easily see how working on watches can be a great source of satisfaction.  It's like restoring a car.  Some guys enjoy the work and satisfaction of bringing a classic back to life more than driving them or collecting them in a garage.

I wish my eyes were better and my fingers smaller so that I could do work on watches but I've got a lot to learn before I even attempt that!

Limitations? With all the information here I can't resist pushing mine. I've been on the forum almost a year now. A year ago I had never opened up a mechanical watch. Since then I've done things I never would have imagined. My last big project was in September when I was tempted by another one of Ramon's offerings. It started out non-running with the typical poorly done fake dial. After I got it running I wasn't happy with how dinged up the case was. The crown was also chewed up so I made some changes to both to remove the issues. Since I was that far into it I couldn't leave the rest of it alone. It has a ceramic insert and a high dome acrylic crystal. The dial was from a junk dress watch and I just lumed the chrome markers. Silver hands were too hard to see so I painted them. I used blue lume on everything, including the markings on the bezel. It's bright enough to read with in the dark (I couldn't resist trying). I really wanted to test myself on this one. Now that the rush of Christmas and my wedding is done I'm one the hunt for another, maybe a 7002 this time with an NH35 and date at 4  >:D

Sources like Ramon are great for finding out what limitations are because it is no big loss if (and inevitably when) something eventually goes wrong. I look at it as practice for working on the few originals I have.
