The wife isn't happy-
« on: February 06, 2012, 12:01:38 PM »
I spent the last few weeks, convincing my wife that it was a good idea for me to buy another Seiko for myself, since the new limited edition divers were about to arrive.

I was kinda skeptical about buying a watch with a rubber shroud, especially with the off the wall colors I was seeing in the pics.

But when I saw them in person, I liked them... a lot,

I like the brown one the most. It's got a really cool looking dial.

so-

I bought one of each color :)

The shroud was the focal point when I was looking at pictures of the watch. But in person, it seems less prominent. The red one really gets attention though.

Ok, I'll share what I know about 'em.

SRP233 (RED-BLACK) SRP 234 (BLACK-GOLD) SRP 236 (BROWN-ROSE GOLD)

They are brand new limited editions of a new model of the Seiko superior line. As far as I can tell, they are the first non Seiko 5 divers to get the new 4R36 movement that hacks, and winds.

As you can see, the bezel looks like a monster, and the rubber shroud looks like a small tuna. Some folks are calling them "baby tuna", others "tuna-monster".

Here's a pic from ditoy_eagle over at the Philippine watch club, that shows the shroud diameter at it's base-   The bezel diameter is nearly identical to my sammie.

I snapped a pic of the new model next to a sammie.

They are slightly taller, and a bigger diameter than a sammie. And the bezel profile is totally different, but they still wear really comfortable, like an average size diver, on my 7.5 wrist.

I was surprised with my first impression of quality when I picked one up.

I've got a strong feeling, that this model will be a big hit when they release some toned down color combos on stainless for mass production.

Mark, at $500 a pop, those must have needed some 'extra' persuasion for the wife to yield.

Nice collection, my friend. I have added the gold one in my shopping list.  :57:

Time, they are going at a much higher rate lately. There's one for sale in the S&T forum for $600++ (Plastic shroud notwithstanding..)

Congrats Mark. They look really very lovely!

Each time I "Get Caught" while trying to sneak another watch, I have to buy a "Hand Bag" for my other better half, then she is happy, I am happy.  >:D It makes me double poor though  :))

First off, the shroud isn't plastic. It's rubber. From what I can tell, it's the same material used in the strap. It's somewhat flexible, and has the same texture, and color.

The lume is decent, but it's not a torch like my sammie.

The new models have what looks like applied markers, with really thick white lume. The dial "pops" and looks good, especially the brown one.

The hands have a greenish tint to the lume, and the lume is a little brighter on the hands than on the markers.

I'll experiment with my camera, and try to get some lume shots, and comparison shots with a sammie, later...

The price varied a little between all 3 color combos. The brown one cost the most, the red was in the middle, and the black one was the least expensive.

Seiko watches have a lower MSRP here in the Philippines, plus I was able to negotiate a further discount from a small watch shop by buying all 3 pieces.

Remember, these are limited editions, hence the high asking price from the forum sellers. Seiko will only make 1300 pieces of each color combo, and from what I understand, they will only be sold in Asia.

If anyone is seriously interested in buying one, send me a pm. I want to keep the set that I have, but might be able to find others if I hurry... I think the mall watch stores have a few displayed for around $400. Can't negotiate a discount with them though-

Here are those lume shots-

One thing I noticed when I put the red one on a nylon zulu, is the lug length is quite a bit longer than I'm used to on my sammie.

Edited to add:

**While on the rubber dive strap, I didn't notice the longer lug length at all. Also tried the watch on leather, and it also felt good. But, on the zulu the small gap between the lugs and my wrist was more obvious. This may be of some concern to those of us with smaller, or more round shaped wrists.**

Here's another side shot, to show the line which looks like a mold seam in the rubber, across the bottom edge of the shroud, that I think shows up more on the red one.

Here's another shot of my all time favorite watch model for comparison-

and finally, a case back shot-

Asian only limited edition, but even for that they're quite Sharp. I'd get a spare set of shrouds and straps, as the straps seem to be bespoke colours and will degrade over time. Spray spares with silicone and seal in a bag with a dessicant satchel and they'll look factory fresh when the stock ones are old and cracked.

I don't want to be a downer, But IMHO I like the hands and the indices, Not fond of the rubber shroud and the molded look turns me away, The bezel markers are TOO pronounced for me with the overall look, Maybe If I saw one in person the Watch would strike me differently  ???  And LE or not, Too much $ for a Seikasio.

Thanks for the Info.  So these are essentially "Rubber Tunas"?

I have to say that using rubber for the shroud material in these inexpensive models is not a bad idea (provided the rubber is a long lasting compound (might want to buy a few spares and keep them around as this piece ages).  Rubber is definitely a far better material for protecting against impacts and scrapes, and should be easier and much cheaper to replace.

I'm really liking these Rubber Tunas.  I agree on the need for a standard version in stainless steel though.  BTW, what are prices for these?

Thanks for the post DAHASCO-

This isn't a sale thread, but more of a review of 3 versions of a new model, and I appreciate all comments and opinions. I was also very skeptical when i first read about these watches, but when I saw them in person  I realized I liked them enough to get my wallet out. I've been looking at new Seikos, trying to decide on a new model to purchase. It seems like they are determined to incorporate different materials like plastic, or rubber into their new watch designs. I remember the first time I saw one with plastic on the bezel, and said out lout "NO WAY". This model was a little different, maybe partly because I was already expecting the rubber shroud, and also partly due to the quality PVD coating on the bezel and lugs, a popping dial and cool looking hands. Odd, in that I've never been a fan of the monster style bezel, but when it's shrouded, I like it albeit rubber...  Add in the fact that this was my first Limited Edition Seiko, and the added bonus of this being the first air diver with the new movement, and I was sold.

Anyway, I'm not feeling buyers remorse yet, but if the rubber starts falling apart while they sit in their boxes, I'll be pissed- :57:

The price-

Here in the Philippines, all Seiko watches have an MSRP that's a little bit lower than other countries. Maybe due to the fact that most people here are very poor, but not sure.

With today's US dollar exchange rate, the MSRP was a little over $400 US.

I was able to get a further discount  ;)

Not sure where the street prices will be in the West, when they finally get there-
