My first 62mas (a little tlc)
« on: February 06, 2012, 01:16:59 AM »
I have been after one for a while and this arrived for Christmas  :celebrate:

Lots of pictures Sorry  ;)
It tooks a while to source the donor for spares and a few new parts arrived last week, I love a little project and this has not dissapointed...lots of bits to find  :57:

This is what I bought

And this is what arrived

Super keen to get inside as the day quickset and hand setting would not work (not a suprise, but a slight disappointment)

Plenty of oil  ::)  and a bit of damage, caused by a seized cannon pinion.

The donor movement was a 6205b which supplied the new date corrector.

All new parts fitted (after a full clean of all the movement)

One side nearly done

Dial and hands on...now I have a NOS dial but I won't be fitting it now (maybe when I find a decent set of hands)

Then the other side

The crystal needed replacing but I had to clean up the case a bit first... good honest dirt!

Cleaned up a treat

The crystal and bezel on.

Then off to the timing machine, this is without any regulation, just as is after the service, I will wear it for the week and then give it a tweak.

Very happy, I can't wait to get another if I'm lucky.

Just a quick run down of the rebuild, had a great time

That's excellent amplitude for an old Seiko. In fact, it might even be a bit higher than what's shown, as I've a feeling the lift angle is closer to 54.5 degrees (could be wrong). In any case, did you replace the mainspring?

Thanks for an excellent post!

Best wishes,
Myles

Nice Job Barry, congratulations! The 62mas is my favourite Seiko Diver.  :)

The date corrector donor movement looks like a 6206b as it has the daywheel locator lever and the day/date wheel selector?

Great read, thanks for that! Did you have any trouble fitting the bezel? The wire clip on mine really gives me problems, in spite of excellent fitting advice I received through the forum!
When you get the time, would you take a closeup of your NOS dial - thanks!

Thanks everyone  ^-^

It had to be done, the 62mas deserves to be worn and it is not too perfect which would make me worry about wearing it.

Myles, Yes I was pretty happy with that, I will set it up properly when it is ready for regulation.
I cleaned the spring and lubed it with a Deflocculated Acheson Graphite (Dag) lube I had, it works a treat (though the graphite is a devil to get off your hands)

Well spotted Duncan, it was a late night post.... 6206b from a M55 Sealion.

Clayton, I will be getting another, thanks for the spare movement, always handy to have just in case !

Harry, Sorry I had no problem, this looked like it was the first time it had been removed and it popped back on with no issues, I rotated it slighlty as I pressed it back down, maybe that will help.

Dial pic to follow.

Hello Harry

Sorry it took a while  :-[

The date stamp indicates it was made in 1970

It has a little dust on it which I will remove when the hands arrive (they are in the post now)  :57:

Enjoy your Sunday everyone  :)

Thanks Barry, wonderful dial for reference purposes! Interesting to see the date stamp, suggesting the dials were produced AFTER the last production date of the watch itself, perhaps a run to provide parts for repairs?

The date stamp indicates it was made in 1970

I believe that stamp would indicate either October (0) or December (D) of 1967- the latter letter is a little heavy- hard to tell if it is "0" or "D" (I lean towards "0").  From what I have seen, it appears that the ink date code on the back of dials from this era follows the conventions of the first two digits of the case back serial number (first digit is year within any given decade, second is month within that year).

I will keep you mind John, TBH not sure what to do with the old dial, I think it may respond well to a relume.

Noah, thanks for that info, I have had another look at it and it is a seven zero so that would be October 1967.
